VICTORY! In a win for student expression on campus, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals today overruled a lower court's decision, sided with FIRE’s clients, and blocked West Texas A&M University’s unconstitutional ban on drag shows.

Lawyers from a free speech group brought a lawsuit on behalf of the Stanford Daily, a student newspaper, arguing that the use of an immigration law section to target the students is unconstitutional. Some of the paper's members have been forced to self-censor or quit, the lawyers said.

BREAKING: FIRE is suing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenging the laws he is using to target lawfully present noncitizens for speech protected by the Constitution.

No administration should be able to deport lawfully present noncitizens for their opinions.

TAKE ACTION: Secretary Rubio claims he can expel foreign students for voicing opinions contrary to the administration’s “foreign policy.” This unbounded power violates the First Amendment.

That’s why FIRE wants to fight it. If Rubio’s threats affect you, contact us ➡️ thefire.org/SOS

as a rule you should be extremely worried when a federal agency uses the phrase "hide behind the First Amendment"

"To ban the performance from taking place on campus because it offends some members of the campus community is precisely what the First Amendment prohibits."

Wrote about the president's litigation against media outlets:

Media outlets must not cave to Trump’s lawfare
What happens to press freedom when the President can bully media outlets he doesn’t like into paying big money to end his meritless lawsuits?

We should protect the freedom to speak for all students—including international students. But with Trump's latest executive order and threat to deport what he deems “Hamas sympathizers,” international students will be rightfully afraid their words are under a microscope. My latest at @msnbc.com:
Opinion | Trump’s threat to deport anti-Israel protesters is an attack on free speech
The president’s executive order on antisemitism would make universities monitor students’ constitutionally protected speech.

We must apply the First Amendment to artificial intelligence.

The Constitution protects the right to receive information and ideas — and AI arguably holds more knowledge-producing potential than even the internet or the printing press.

My latest for the LA Times:
Opinion: California and other states are rushing to regulate AI. This is what they're missing
The next great free speech battle will be over artificial intelligence, which deserves as much constitutional deference as older communications technologies.

This amicus from a group of law professors makes some super interesting arguments! (And yes, I made a TikTok about it. :) )
Some quotes from our First Amendment and Internet Law Professor's TikTok amicus:
1. The Act amounts to a massive suppression of speech--literally losing huge amounts of speech posted by users, or their curated libraries of speech.
