Had a wonderful weekend at Lincoln Nerd Fest. Despite its infancy, this was the best-selling con for me all year!

My best day of sales peddling my books so far this year. Feeling very lucky to live in a city that stills supports its local artists!
A very cool spot for my books in front of the historic Creamery Building in the Lincoln Haymarket today!

Writers are so fascinating. Instinctively this feels like terrible advice since I love writing and despise editing. You can take my first drafts out of my cold dead hands, elf
hi this is my favorite writing advice, it's from former simpsons writer john swartzwelder (i think about the crappy little elf all the time) www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

I’m sorry but no way anyone alive remembers this technology
Dear youngs,

That wire thing on top of the tv was called an antenna, and you'd often have to move it all around to catch the signal for the channel you wanted to watch.

I just went through the Amazon profile of an author who’s put out 151 full-length novels since April. What’s your excuse?

…oh, you’re actually writing yours? And not using AI to generate everything down to the title and cover? Yeah, that’s fair, actually.

I’ll push it one further: you should actually ENJOY the act of writing. Way too many people who write because it’s How You Produce a Book. And whether good or bad, you can always tell if a book was loved by its author.
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 6336675: You have to actually WANT to write. The world is filled with would-be writers fantasising about lunch with agents, foreign tours, prizes, six-figure book deals, meeting movie stars. But that’s all mostly fiction. None of it makes you a writer.

To be clear, any meaningful amount of success is largely pay to play, even in trad publishing…but only after you’ve actually written an excellent novel. Money has nothing to do with the quality of an author themselves
Saw a post recently about what makes someone a "serious" writer. It included studying writing at university, partaking in multi-day workshops, attending conferences, attending awards ceremonies.

Sounds a lot like pay-to-play, to me.

I keep reading articles about how GPT-5 is “thinking” and it makes me want to white guy wall-punch the nearest structure

Weirdly I disagree with a lot of this discourse because I don’t understand the point of arguing with someone like this.

I say let them try and fail. It’s strange to try and gatekeep writing itself if they’ll never make it past the gates of publication anyway.
This week, I had a long chat with yet another person who wants to be an author. Has "written a fanfic novel" and now wants to "write my own and sell it to publishers".

OK, name the last 5 novels you've read? Problem.

OK; what's the last non-fanfic thing you've written? Nothing.

This is just blatantly untrue. That is also what the About the Author section is for
The blank pages at the back of books are for you to tear out and eat

Been reading a collection of short stories by another local author, and in one supernatural creatures live peacefully with others, except vampires still eat humans. At first I thought it was bad writing because there’s no way people would accept getting killed by their rulers, and then I realized…

Just finishing watching Inglorious Basterds for the first time at the encouragement of my fiancée. Wow, if watching Nazis get brutalized in 2025 isn’t still so satisfying.

sometimes I feel like people who freak out about keeping science fiction and fantasy separate and distinct are like that little kid who doesn't want the peas and carrots to touch on their plate.

It's all imaginative fiction, folks.
