Happy Heavenly Birthday to Luis Tiant , who passed away at the age of 83 in 2024. He was a 3x 20 game winner and 2x AS with the Sox. He is 5th in Sox history in Wins 122, Games Started 238 and WAR 35.9. He is 4th in innings pitched 1774.2 and Shutouts 26.

On this date in 1972 Carlton Fisk becomes the 1st unanimous American League Rookie of the Year. For the year he hit .293, with 22 HR’s, a .909 OPS and a 7.3 WAR. He won the Gold Glove and finished 4th for MVP.

Dwight Evans 1990 Topps Baseball Card. That season was Evans 19th and final season with the Red Sox. He played in 123 Games, hitting .249 with 13 HR’s, 63 RBI’s and a .740 OPS.

Happy 50th Birthday to David Ortiz, who was a 10x AS and 7x Silver Slugger winner. He is the all time record holder for DH’s with 485 HR’s, 1569 RBI’s and 2192 hits. He had 10 seasons each with 30 HR’s and 100 RBI’s. He is 6th in AL history with 541 HR’s, 5th in Doubles 632, and 9th in RBI’s 1768.

On this date in 1979 the Red Sox sign future HOF’er Tony Pérez as a Free Agent. In 1980 he hits .275, with 25 HR’s, 105 RBI’s and a .786 OPS. Overall in 3 seasons with the Sox he appears in 304 Games, hitting .266, with 40 HR’s and a .760 OPS.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Jimmy Piersall, who passed away at the age of 87 in 2017. Piersall played for the Red Sox from 1950-58, hitting .273, with 66 HR’s, and a .737 OPS. He was a 2x AS and a GG winner in 1958. His battle with bipolar disorder is depicted in the book and film Fear Strikes Out.
