Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 1989, after 16 years with the same team Jim Rice is released by the Red Sox. He finishes his career with a .298 Average, 2,452 Hits, 382 HR’s, 1451 RBI’s, a .502 Slugging %, a .854 OPS and a 47.7 WAR. He was a 8x AS, won 1 MVP, with 6 top 5 finishes and entered the HOF in 2009.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Jimmy Piersall, who passed away at the age of 87 in 2017. Piersall played for the Red Sox from 1950-58, hitting .273, with 66 HR’s, and a .737 OPS. He was a 2x AS and a GG winner in 1958. His battle with bipolar disorder is depicted in the book and film Fear Strikes Out.

Kevin Youkilis from 2008-10 had a great run, in 383 Games, he hit .308, with 75 HR’s, a .404 OBP, a .560 Slugging % and a 18.3 WAR. He came in 3rd for MVP in 2008 and 6th in 2009. In 2008 he won the AL Hank Aaron Award for the best offensive performance of the 2008 season.

Sadly on this date in 2017 Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox passed away at the age of 99. At the time of his passing he was the oldest living player and the last to play MLB in the 1930’s. In his 14 year career he was a 9x AS, batted over .300 3x, drove in more then 100 Run 6x and entered the HOF in 1986.

Happy 72nd Birthday to 2nd Baseman Kim Andrew, who the Red Sox acquired from the Orioles in the December 1974 Rule 5 Draft. 1975 with Bristol and Pawtucket he hit .318, with 1 HR and a .749 OPS, earning a promotion to Boston where he had 1 hit in 2 at bats. That was the extent of his MLB experience.

Carlton Fisk receives the Ford C. Frick Award as the 1972 American League Rookie of the Year, prior to a game at Fenway in 1973. In 1972 he hit .293, with a league leading 9 Triples, 22 HR’s, a .909 OPS and a 7.3 WAR. Besides winning ROY he was a AS, won a GG and came in 4th for MVP.

On this date in 2015 the Red Sox acquired Craig Kimbrel from the Padres for 4 Prospects. He Pitched for the Sox for 3 seasons, with 2017 being his best, in 67 Games he was 5-0, with a 1.43 ERA, 35 Saves and a 3.6 WAR. Overall he was 12-7 with a 2.44 ERA, 108 Saves and was a 3x All Star.

On this date in 2000 Pedro Martinez becomes the 1st Pitcher to win the American League Cy Young Award unanimously 2 consecutive seasons. His 2000 season was the best of his career, he was 18-6, with a 1.74 ERA, 291 ERA+, 284 Strikeouts, a 0.737 WHIP, 5.3 hits per 9, 11.8 SO/9 and a 11.7 WAR.

On this date in 2007 Josh Beckett of the Red Sox finished 2nd in the AL Cy Young award voting to CC Sabathia. That season he was 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA and a league leading 6.5 WAR. During the postseason in 4 Starts, he was 4-0 with a 1.20 ERA, winning the ALCS MVP.

Happy 67th Birthday to Dan Petry who the Red Sox acquired from the Braves August 16, 1991 for Mickey Pina. He appeared in 13 Games with no record, a 4.43 ERA and 1 Save. That was his last season ending a 13 year MLB career.

On this date in 2005 the Red Sox acquired Calvin Schiraldi in an 8 player deal with the Mets. 1986 in 25 Games he was 4-2, with a 1.41 ERA, 9 Saves and a 2.9 WAR. In game 6 of the WS he had a meltdown and was never the same again. In Dec 1987 he was traded to the Cubs with Al Nipper for Lee Smith.

The Red Sox acquired Minor League Pitcher Darrell Brandon from the Astros for Jack Lamabe in October 1965. He pitched for the Sox from 1966-68, in 87 Games, 36 Starts he was 13-19, with a 3.84 ERA and 5 Saves. In Oct 1968 he was selected by the Seattle Pilots from the Sox in the Expansion Draft.
