Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 1946 the Red Sox acquired slugger Rudy York from the Tigers in exchange for Eddie Lake. He played for the Sox in parts of 2 seasons. In 1946 he hit .276, with 17 HR’s, 119 RBI’s and a .808 OPS. York served as the Sox hitting Coach from 1959-62, and Managed them for 1 Game in 1959.

Happy 76th Birthday to Jim Dwyer, who the Red Sox acquired from the Giants for cash on March 15, 1979. Dwyer played 2 seasons for the Sox, appearing in 169 Games hitting .279, with 11 HR’s and a .779 OPS.

Happy 65th Birthday to John Leister who the Red Sox selected in the 3rd round of the January 1984 draft. Leister pitched in a total of 10 Games in the 1987 & 1990 seasons, starting 7 and going 0-2 with a 8.50 ERA. That is his only MLB experience.

Nomar Garciaparra’s 1999 Topps Baseball Card. On May 10, 1999 Garciaparra had one of the great games in Red Sox history, going 3-4, with 3 HR’s, 2 Grand Slams and 10 RBI’s in a 12-4 win over the Mariners. That season he led the AL with a .357 Average, hit 27 HR’s, had a 1.022 OPS and a 6.6 WAR.

Bob Veale’s 1973 Topps Baseball Card. Veale a long time Starter for the Pirates pitched out of the Bullpen for the Red Sox. In parts of 3 seasons with the Sox, 1972-74, he appeared in 56 Games, going 4-4 with a 3.45 ERA and 15 Saves.

On this date in 1981 Terry Francona from the University of Arizona win’s the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation‘s most outstanding Amatuer player by the U.S. Baseball Federation. Francona would later go on and manage the Red Sox to 2 World Series titles in 8 years.

On this date in 1996 the Red Sox signed Free Agent Pitcher Jamie Moyer to a 1 year $825,000 contract. In 23 Games, 10 Starts Moyer was 7-1 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.5 WAR. On July 30, 1996 he was traded to the Mariners for Darren Bragg, he went on to pitch 25 seasons and win 269 Games.

On this date in 1992 the Red Sox sign Free Agent Pitcher Frank Viola to a 3 year $13.9 Million contract. He pitched 3 seasons for the Sox but missed most of the 3rd season after needing Tommy John surgery. Overall he made 70 Starts, going 25-21. With a 3.40 ERA and 11.0 WAR.

Don Schwall’s 1962 Topps Baseball Card. 1961 Schwall’s rookie year he made 25 starts, going 15-7 with a 3.22 ERA and a 3.3 WAR. He was named an All Star and won the Rookie of the Year award. He became the 2nd Sox ROY after Walt Dropo in 1950.
