On this date in 2007 Mike Lowell returns to the Red Sox signing for 3 years and $37.5 Million Dollars. Lowell was coming off a season where he hit .324, with 21 HR’s, 120 RBI’s, a .879 OPS and a 5.0 WAR. He came in 5th for MVP and won World Series MVP.

On this date in 1971 George Scott won his 3rd Gold Glove with the Red Sox, while hitting .263, with 24 HR’s, 78 RBI’s and a .758 OPS.

Happy 50th Birthday to J.D. Drew who the Red Sox signed to a 5 yr 70 million dollar contract in January 2007. In his time with Boston Drew hit .264, with 80 HR’s, a .824 OPS and a 11.3 WAR. He made his only AS team in 2008 and was named MVP of the game.

The Red Sox picked up Dwayne Hosey off Waivers from the Royals in August 1995. He played in 24 Games with the Sox that season hitting .338, with 3 HR’s and a 1.026 OPS. That postseason he was hitless in 12 at bats. The following season he struggled and was traded In November 1996.

On this date in 2008 the Red Sox acquired Reliever Ramón Ramírez from the Royals for Coco Crisp. In 2009 he appeared in 70 Games, going 7-4 with a 2.84 ERA. The following season he struggled and on July 31, 2010 he was traded to the Giants for Daniel Turpen.

Happy 95th Birthday to Joe Morgan, from Walpole, MA. When he became Red Sox Manager in July 1988 the Sox won 12 straight games and 19 out of 20, a period known as “Morgan’s Magic”. His record with the Sox was 301-262, winning the Division in 1988 and 1990.

Happy 47th Birthday to Jeff Bailey, who the Red Sox signed as a Minor League Free Agent in November 2003. He played for the Sox in parts of 3 seasons from 2007-09. In 56 Games he hit .228 with 6 HR’s and a .773 OPS.

Luis Tiant with his mom and dad on September 11, 1975. His parents were granted permission from Fidel Castro to watch their son pitch in the Major Leagues, the last time they saw him was in 1961. Luis Tiant Sr pitched in the Negro Leagues and was known for his great Screwball.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Cal Koonce who passed away at the age of 52 in 1993. The Mets sold Koonce to the Red Sox in June 1970, and he played the final 2 seasons of his 10 year career with them. In 36 Games 9 Starts he was 3-5 with a 3.98 ERA and 2 Saves.

On this date in 2008 Dustin Pedroia became the 3rd player in MLB history to win MVP after winning ROY the preceding season and was the 1st 2nd baseman to win the award since Nellie Fox in 1959. He led the AL in hits 213, Doubles 54, and Runs 118, while hitting .326, with 17 HR’s and a .869 OPS.

Happy 63rd Birthday to Jamie Moyer, who pitched part of 1 season for the Red Sox in 1996 going 7-1 with a 4.50 ERA. On July 30, 1996 he was traded to the Mariners for Darren Bragg, he went on to win an 214 additional games, and pitch to the age of 49, until his retirement in 2012.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Gene Mauch who passed away at the age of 79 in 2005. He played parts of 2 seasons with the Red Sox, in 72 Games he hit .274, with 2 HR’s and a .705 OPS. After his tenure with the Sox he became a Minor League Manager for them , before Managing 4 different teams for 26 yrs.

Happy 50th Birthday to David Ortiz, who was a 10x AS and 7x Silver Slugger winner. He is the all time record holder for DH’s with 485 HR’s, 1569 RBI’s and 2192 hits. He had 10 seasons each with 30 HR’s and 100 RBI’s. He is 6th in AL history with 541 HR’s, 5th in Doubles 632, and 9th in RBI’s 1768.

Relief Pitcher Bobby Bolin was acquired by the Red Sox from the Brewers for Al Yates on September 10, 1970. He pitched for the Sox through the 1973 season, in 118 Games he was 10-8, with a 3.28 ERA and 28 Saves. The Sox released him in March of 1974.

Fred Lynn’s 1977 Hostess Baseball Card. That year was easily the worst year Lynn had as a Red Sox, in 129 Games, he hit .260, with 18 HR’s, 76 RBI’s and a .774 OPS, although he did make his 3rd All Star team.

Former teammate Pedro Martinez places the 2004 WS trophy on the head of David Ortiz during pregame ceremonies at Fenway Park. The Sox were hosting the Toronto Blue Jays in the final game of the regular season on October 2, 2016, it was also the final regular season game for a retiring David Ortiz.

On this date in 1992 the Red Sox lost Jody Reed in the Expansion Draft to the Colorado Rockies. Reed drafted in the 8th rd by the Sox in 1984, played 6 seasons with them, hitting .280 with 17 HR’s and a .730 OPS. From 1989-91 he had 40+ Doubles each season, leading the AL with 45 in 1990.

On this date in 1975 the Red Sox acquired HOF’er Ferguson Jenkins from the Rangers for Juan Beniquez, Steve Barr and Craig Skok. In 2 seasons with the Sox he was 22-21, with a 3.47 ERA and a 7.0 WAR. Not getting along with MGR Don Zimmer he was traded back to the Rangers for John Poloni in Dec 1977.

Happy 89th Birthday to Pitcher Gary Bell, who the Red Sox acquired from the Indians for 2 players in June 1967. In parts of 2 seasons with the Sox he appeared in 64 Games, 51 Starts going 23-19, with a 3.13 ERA and 4 Saves. He was selected by the Seattle Pilots in the October 1968 Expansion Draft.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to the Great Tom Seaver who passed away at the age of 75 in 2020. The Red Sox acquired him from the White Sox in June 1986 for Steve Lyons and he started 16 Games going 5-7 with a 3.80 ERA. He retired with 311 Wins, 3 CYA’s and was elected to the HOF in 1992.
