Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 1988 Rich Gedman becomes the highest paid Catcher in the American League after he signs a 1 yr $1.2 million dollar contract with the Red Sox. He spent parts of 11 seasons with the Sox, from 1980-1990, hitting .259 with 83 HR’s and a .723 OPS. He was a 2x AS.

On this date in 1958 the Red Sox signed 19 yr old Carl Yastrzemski to a bonus of $100,000 after a brief stint at Notre Dame. Yaz spent 2 yrs in the minors and 23 yrs with Boston. He was an 18x AS and 7x GG Winner. Between 1967 and 1970 he had a 38.0 WAR, winning the MVP and Triple Crown in 1967.

Happy 61st Birthday to John Burkett, who the Red Sox signed as a FA in December 2001. He Pitched 2 seasons for the Sox, Starting 59 Games, throwing 354.2 innings, with a record of 25-17 and a 4.85 ERA. He retired following the 2003 season after a 15 yr career.

On this date in 1979 the Red Sox signed Free Agent Reliever Skip Lockwood to a contract after a successful 5 year run with the Mets. In 1980 he struggled with the Sox, in 24 Games he was 3-1, with a 5.32 ERA and 2 Saves. He was released the spring of 1981 and retired shortly afterwards.

Eduardo Núñez holds the WS Trophy as the team travels back to Boston after winning the 2018 WS. That season Núñez hit .265, with 10 HR’s and a .677 OPS. In Game 1 of the WS he hit a Pinch Hit 3 run HR in his 1st WS At Bat ever, to give the Sox an 8-4 lead, which was the final score.

Happy 87th Birthday to Jose Tartabull who played for the Red Sox from 1966-68. He appeared in 255 Games, hitting .255 with no HR’s and a .594 OPS. His biggest moment with the Sox was on August 27, 1967, he threw out Ken Berry at home for the final out in a Red Sox 4-3 win over the White Sox.
