I've been a watching a bit more football that usual recently, and I feel like something similar to basketball has happened: analytics are sucking the soul out of the spectacle.

Spotify has switched on its lossless streaming service. The quality is very good, but it comes at a pretty steep data cost: 1GB per hour! Fine for WiFi but probably not suitable for most mobile data plans. That said, it feels like an opportunity for operators to upsell a data bundle to audiophiles.

I enjoyed this a lot. Highly recommended, if only for the incredibly haunting final chord of the piece in question.

Very interesting article. What i find particularly striking is the total lack of self awareness on display. These people are extremely privileged and live in a bubble completely removed from the problems they think they alone can solve. Their arrogance is breathtaking.
At last, we're starting to see coverage of much of AI culture as the heathen cult it is. I wish, though, they'd build on the fuller work of @xriskology.bsky.social & @timnitgebru.bsky.social re #TESCREAL.

Fascinating stuff. Reed Hastings spoke about how he figured out that a DVD business would benefit from the network effect since you store the data once and share it many times. Of course that became the foundation of most cloud based businesses.
At one time, "any business characterized by network effects" was called a "natural monopoly" and was regulated under antitrust as a utility.
