No way to pull just a single quote from this article. It's worth a read from start to finish. Share it and keep it where you can reread it and reshare it. It's that good. #JustMercy
If you read one thing today, make it this piece by @nytimes.com's Kurt Streeter about the extraordinary Bryan Stevenson. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/u...

The Supreme Court bans affirmative action in university admissions but is okay with racial profiling on American streets. That pretty much sums up white supremacy--heads I win, tails you lose, all legal.

extremely interesting to sub "WOKE" with "truth" as you read.

Also, the Blacksonian IS celebratory of American success; that's how Parliament Funkadelic's Mothership rests under the same roof as Emmett Till's casket and child size manacles.

There's plenty of joy and future gazing. It's just Black.

This story shocked people. We go about our business and don't realize that our pools, our neighborhoods, our schools are mostly white. We tell ourselves we are open-minded. Maybe we are. But maybe not enough to see we benefit from a system built on racism.

Why doesn’t Baltimore County have any public pools? Blame segregation.
There are no public pools in Baltimore County. Nearly 70 years after the Supreme Court's Brown decision overturning the "separate but equal" principle, some attribute this to the legacy of segregation...

According to new Gallup polling, about 8 in 10 Americans, 79%, say immigration is “a good thing” for the country today, an increase from 64% a year ago. Only about 2 in 10 U.S. adults say immigration is a bad thing right now, down from 32% last year.
Poll shows how U.S. views of immigration have changed since Trump took office
Since taking office, Trump has called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to do all in its power to deliver “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”

What voters think nativism will mean: stop giving benefits to others, so you can focus resources on citizens

What it actually means in practice: stop giving citizens benefits, so you can focus resources on punishing others

Useful 🧵 on the bankruptcy of the "universal injunctions" case Friday. Very far from "calling balls and strikes as we see them." I would like to elaborate. /1
That's particularly true because equitable remedies have always been understood as marked by flexibility to meet the nature of the issue and the harm. What the Court did (which, again, isn't totally new) is mindless originalism on steroids.

I encourage everyone to actually read the dissent. The description of what this government is doing should shock anyone with a conscience. It is unfathomably cruel, indeed sadistic. And yes, *this* is being enabled by the highest court in the nation.
#BREAKING: Over a (sharp) public dissent from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS clears the way for the Trump administration to remove migrants to third countries *without* giving them an additional opportunity to contest whether they face persecution or other forms of mistreatment there:

Essential “No Kings Day” reading from my PhD advisor T.H. Breen.

George Washington specifically rejected a military parade like the one Trump is having tomorrow. What seems to a king like a sign of strength should be seen by citizens as a loss of liberty.
