One of the many reasons why even an independent Confederacy that the Union just decided to let go without a fight would've been a nightmare for peace in the Americas. They would've inevitable ended up going to war with the Union, Britain, Spain, Mexico or all of the above sooner or later.
Also, uhhhh. This was the secessionists entire idea of what they were going to do once they won the Civil War. There is actually a book about their imperialist dream: “The Southern Dream of a Caribbean Empire, 1854-1861.” I haven’t read the book yet and a few others on the topic.
