Now re-watching

13: Hero (2002). Yet another movie I loved as a kid, revisited as an adult, and loved and appreciated even more. The cinematography is stunning, as well as the layered stories of what really happened. Even if I dislike its overall message, it portrays the question very well.

12: Dune Part Two. Look is this extremely basic? Yes, I don't care, it's great. I already liked Part One and this one ramps things up even more. It and its predecessor make for a nice lazy weekend binge, and I admit there were times in HEMA, after a Messer match, I'd say "You fought well, Atreides."

11: The Name of the Rose (1986). Probably my favorite Connery performance and a wonderful murder mystery within a historical setting, and one which also influenced one of my favorite video games, Pentiment.

10: The Long Good Friday. I admit I am not super into British gangster films, but this one is just a good example of 70s films generally. Its core mystery is interesting, especially as viewers in the 70s might have been able to figure it out from the start but for us it can be more puzzling.

9: Escape from New York. Maybe my favorite Carpenter film, straddling both the 70s and 80s action films, its dark atmosphere just cements it as one of my favorite action films, certainly of the 80s but more generally as well.

8: A Bridge Too Far. A favorite of mine since I was 9. Truth be told this movie, like Star Wars, has been an old favorite of mine so long that it's hard for me to describe why I like it, but I do, even as an adult. Probably my favorite World War 2 movie.

7: Night Moves (1975). I've sure talked about it enough. I acknowledge there are better 70s noirs out there (Chinatown, for instance), but for some reason I think the sort of listlessness of Hackman's Moseby in this film is fascinating, and it captivated me more than Chinatown.

6: Ran. One of Kurosawa's masterpieces, and while I love his earlier films with Mifune, this one just completely captured my imagination. I think this is one where the vibrancy of its colors gives it a slight edge, unfortunately.

5: The Lion in Winter (1968). Gods damn, what a brilliant film. Shot beautifully, acted masterfully, written superbly. Yes it's not strictly historically accurate but I don't really care. My one regret is that I tie it so closely to Christmas I don't watch it outside December, really.

4: The Battle of Algiers. Another one that I can always just come and rewatch, a superb film lent authenticity by its cast and by Pontecorvo's documentary style. Also essential to watch for war or guerilla movies.
November 13, 2025 at 5:02 PM
3: Star Wars. Rewatched it and the rest of the OT after finishing Andor and you know what? This is a damn good movie. Still a damn good movie as an adult. Loved it as a kid and I look forward to showing it to my kids if I ever have them.
November 13, 2025 at 4:54 PM
2: LA Confidential. Another one I can always just rewatch every six months or so, an absolutely brilliant film about a sleazy, corrupt Los Angeles with extremely compelling characters. Also an ACAB movie where the cops are all different, interesting kinds of bastards.
November 13, 2025 at 4:51 PM
1: "Day of the Jackal" (1973), a movie that delivers an extremely tense experience through its quasi-documentary style. One of the greatest examples of "competence porn," and a personal favorite for a rewatch.

Now re-watching (my third time, my friends' first). I legitimately think it's better than the first, which is also a good movie.
