Lot of replies on this one saying “you dodged a bullet” and uh no I’m pretty sure I got hit by a very large bullet that made me bleed a lot and nearly die instead of I guess the apparently much worse bullet of “making 240k/yr after bonus”
3 years ago today, Riot Games offered me a job making more money than I ever thought I’d make in my life. I had 19 interviews over 2.5 months to get it. Partner and I were moving to LA for it. I put in notice at my job and apartment.
2 weeks later they rescinded the offer due to “headcount issues”.

They did not tell me why or what happened. My recruiter’s boss simply had a video call with me where he told me the position was no longer available and they would “try” to find me something else. No one from his team would ever contact me again, even after multiple followups on my part.

The best way journalists can support indie games is to cover more than whatever the current indie hits/darlings of the moment are. Games like Hades, Blue Prince, and Silksong do not need help with visibility, but discoverability is the biggest challenge facing many indie devs today.

I wrote this in response to the obnoxious "get gud" mentality that's been permiating game spaces for way too long, but honestly I feel like the sentiment applies to game makers, too.
There's nothing wrong with explaining mechanics or subtly guiding players, but forced training wheels sucks.
