It’s another conspiracy of silence. Conservatives don’t want to admit they massively increased taxes on high earners. Labour definitely don’t want to say so; they still want to peddle the idea that others, the rich, can pay more. Truth is if we want more spending we’ll all have to pay more.

The strategy is to tariff penguins on purpose and to bring bond yields down and to put Main Street ahead of Wall St and to never negotiate and actually no it's none of those things although I guess we could change our mind whatever
Reporter: “How much of this decision was driven by the bond market cratering overnight?”

Bessent: “This was driven by the president’s strategy.”

Worth stating simply what’s happening. An American government is launching a full-scope political & economic assault on an ally repelling an ongoing invasion to compel them to terminate martial law, topple their president, hand over minerals to America & accept a ceasefire w/out security guarantees.

The lesson that Germany should learn (France has already) is that bad equilibriums are easy to get into and require policy change to get out of. Germany is in one now: it needs tax/labour market reforms and public investment to raise spending. France needs a credible, slow, fiscal tightening.

This kind of language is so like the way the Tory Brexiteers used to talk about trade. For them Brexit was a means to achieve 'free trade'. Reeves' Labour mean 'no new trade barriers that we haven't already chosen ourselves for reasons of overriding domestic political convenience.'

"Anyway, the resultant petition has.. been pushed by public figures ranging from Elon Musk to Michael Caine. Fine. The Jaws film where the shark genuinely follows the Brody family all the way to the Bahamas is no longer the stupidest thing Michael’s done."
Elon Musk and a mass petition want a new UK election. Shall we do that – or just stick to democracy? | Marina Hyde
I know many are aggrieved with Starmer and co, but scrapping a government for Elon and a Shropshire publican seems like a stretch, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde
