The person was fine, but I cannot help but wonder if that was due to the perceptiveness of the Verger on the issue of ordinary people's responses to being unexpectedly surrounded by a half dozen priests at a time of medical crisis.

The mere fact that he is treated as inhabiting the outward edge of normal politics and that he can be opposed by pretending his positions are more normal than they are and then critiquing them is doing half his work for him.
