I work in social media management and tell people all the time I can’t get into TikTok. Why? It’s simply bad fucking content, all of it. And it’s because it relies on video, not text, which is the lowest form of human communication
A take that I’ve been playing with is that absorbing opinions through anything that isn’t text is bad. We’re taught to be skeptical of text, and we’re less skeptical if someone tells us something with confidence. This gets way worse if the person is charismatic and on video.
Since 2020 I’ve increasingly felt like we’re in a digital dark ages, where illiteracy is skyrocketing, people believe in magic, disease is rampant, oligarchs rule, and it’s all facilitated by ultra modern technology that has evolved to reinforce it

Relatedly, Hot Ones’ parent site, First We Feast, was the best journalistic product Complex ever produced. But Complex scrapped it (and wiped the archive) because Hot Ones made the company money. I haven’t worked for Complex since 2017 and this fact still irks me to this day. We did serious work.
I need to pin a post: I was the show’s and First We Feast’s first social media manager and Complex would never jeopardize sponsorships and artist relationships to allow politicians on the show. It’s a show made for press junkets and entertaining softball interviews to, like, sell Sprite
