What a loss
Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

Sitting on my porch, writing, and the elementary school just let out, because the kids are starting to walk by on their way home. I cried when I saw the first kid. Kept crying when the second one walked past my house. They’re safe. Alive. Maybe oblivious.

This country needs a hard reset.

we are in the middle of a monarch butterfly extinction, and the culprit is clear: Pesticides. Absolutely not shocked to find that today RFK's so-called MAHA plans do absolutely nothing to limit pesticides. Buy everything organic you can, we are in a dire situation.
Mass Die-Off of Western Monarch Butterflies Linked to Pesticides, Study Finds
Shameful we are not acting to stop the wipe out of these beautiful Butterflies but profit of pesticide industry who buy politicians is all that matter

Minnesota is broken today. Can’t say any more.
Speaker Hortman was a bold and brave leader who made hard decisions and fought for the people of Minnesota every single day.

She and her husband Mark did not deserve to die. My heart goes out to their children.

NEW: ALA is going to court to stop the President’s attempts to illegally dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services.

The President does not have the authority to destroy a federal agency. That's why we're taking action with our co-plaintiff @afscme.bsky.social. #ForOurLibraries (1/3)

Maggie had so many great things to say at The Loft in Minneapolis last night! So happy I was there to hear her.
I’m on the road again this spring with Dear Writer.📗✈️

I’m heading to New York, Boston, DC, Baltimore, Nashville, Minneapolis, and Columbus. Plus one virtual! I hope you’ll grab a few friends and come say hello.

This will be fun, and we have some surprises up our sleeves, too.

See you soon. x M

An amazing view above the Minnesota State Capitol in St Paul right now.

This must be bigger than anyone imagined. 👏

These are some of the largest protests the US has seen in years.

What she said...
I hope you're all doing okay. Don't forget to take a moment to breathe. Take in beauty with your in breath. Share beauty with your out breath. Make art. Hug someone wonderful. Sit in the sunshine. Drink water. Read a good book. Don't forget to have some lunch. Love yourself. Love the world.

To save a life is to save the world.
Once we start putting a numerical value on a human life, we are lost. And evil has won.

Let me be clear: every human life is of an incalculable worth. Each of you is precious beyond words, beyond thought, beyond reckoning. When men say otherwise, the humanity they deny is their own.
They will soon be saying that the US "can't afford" disabled people, and then new minorities will follow

We need to play.

We need to fail.

We need to experiment. And learn. And try again.

And that's why my #1 piece of advice for picture book writers who have been revising the same pb for years is to gently thank it and set it aside. And then write something new.

We need to keep talking about how weird it is for people to think they should have a say in reading choices for anyone's kids but their own. You're not in charge of what other people's children eat or wear or when they go to bed. Why on earth would you get to choose what they read?

Good morning, #kidlit friends! What's on the agenda to support book world and beyond?

Work on a project.
Buy a book.
Read.
Write a review.
Make a recommendation.
Support your indie and/or library.
Boost a creator.
Send a query.
Edit a chapter.
Find a gem.
Spark literary joy.
Know you are enough.

Yup!
All of the blaming of Democrats--don't be silly. The other side won because of the massive, relentless propaganda coming from all directions, and because the Republicans have systematically weakened our education system over the decades to the point where people don't understand history or civics.

Kate DiCamillo answered questions from kids and grown-ups in Northfield, MN this afternoon. Her advice, great as always...2 pages a day, usually 5 drafts before sharing, and a few sweet memories about her Mom who was extraordinary. 😀
