I wonder why all these great indie games are coming out of Australia where they have a massive public funding effort for videogame creators

Everyone's playing Silksong and here I am, having just finished Ender Lilies. Gorgeous game, that.

What's the highest bang-for-buck automated test? The one that's going to catch the most issues for the least investment? I'd argue it's probably smoke tests!

You can read a full blog post on them below, but here's a short thread summary...

There’s no fire without Smoke Tests
Tickets to my next automation workshop are on sale! It’s a familiar tale: you’ve set up an expensive and time-consuming playtest, and just wanted to squeeze in one more feature. You coo…

This evening, I had the opportunity to try the famous deep-fried Mars bar. Morbid curiosity drove me to take it.

If I have a coronary in my sleep, blame the Scottish.

"What angers me the most is no one will see what we made. Designers, artists, animators, programmers, writers, sound designers—with few exceptions, none of these people will be allowed to show off their work."

Some thoughts on Contraband's cancellation on my blog:

The project I spent a tenth of my life on was just cancelled — none of our work belongs to us
Two days ago, it was announced that Xbox are cancelling Contraband, the project I worked on for the three years and seven months I spent at Avalanche Studios—around 11% of my life, at time of writing,...

That moment when you're looking for a place to eat lunch at and realize there's a Georgian restaurant two blocks away.

Guess who's about to have some khachapuri?

You ever start writing a "short summary" of your thoughts about something, only to realize you've somehow written 750 words and it's now *way* too long to be included in your monthly media roundup post?

Just me?

I realize I'm extremely late to the party, but I just rolled credits on Disco Elysium.

Holy *fuck*, what a game.

For those that don't read Swedish, there's a news post on Avalanche's website:

Alright, I've gushed about Avalanche's CBA, and I've published this month's roundup of stuff I've read/watched/played on my site. Sinusitis is *killing me*, so I'm gonna go relax for a bit.

Welcome to June, everyone! I didn't post anything this month (except for the April edition of this post), largely due to two reasons: First off, I've been dealing with some stress in both my work and...

Woke up to the best news today. Kudos to Avalanche for keeping the commitment they made to me and the other employees last year, and thank you to the current union representatives who continued the work we started!

I was hoping to get my post about the 4-day week up this month, but I've got a 33-page report from the Swedish unions left to read for my notes, and then I'd like to at least skim through the existing reports from the trials that have been done.

So uh... maybe early June.

By incredible coincidence, I opened YouTube this evening to see a video from The Market Exit that was published *yesterday*, in which he interviews Patrik Witkowsky—the author of the book on worker-owned companies that I mention in today's post.

It's a solid video, go watch!

I spent a significant part of my free time—and basically all of my commutes—reading dry reports on things like work time reduction and the "karensavdrag".

That's going into future posts, but in between I squeezed in some more fun stuff. I wrote about it on my site:

The main analysis is what you would say if you were trying to push AI adoption as necessary and not because you give a shit about people
Bit of an odd story this one - the main analysis says women don't use AI because they lack STEM skills, confidence and value in the workplace. Yet the anecdotes suggest that women excel at communication, whether writing or interpersonal, and can spot ChatGPT's flaws

Why are fewer women using AI than men?
The use of artificial intelligence appears to have a significant gender imbalance.

Perhaps the greatest failure of the Swedish Model—of social democracy, really—is the way the will of the workers becomes diluted as unions look for compromise with employers, and the resulting disappointment the workers feel.

My problem with this thinking if I'd be okay with paying more for games if devs actually saw that money. We keep getting told "we need battle passes, loot boxes and seasons because game dev is expensive" and yet we see mass layoffs like it's a normal thing. Where is that extra money going then.
I get the price sensitivity given the state of the world, but are Video Games supposed to never react to inflation?

Someone set a price in the 90's and we're stuck?

If consumers keep saying they want fewer Microtransactions, Seasons, or Paid DLC they need to allow games to react to inflation.
