Writer. Former comic. Prog & metal nerd. Currently residing in tropical Denver, Colorado. Immortal for a limited time. ♾️
Pinned
Alright, time for a proper pinned skeet for the new folks:

Hey-hey! I’m a Denver-based writer working on my first novel, music nerd (primarily metal & prog), amateur photographer, and I did stand-up for eleven years so expect an occasional joke now and again. Welcome and enjoy your stay.
Last night I had a dream that I met Paul McCartney. The funniest part was when I asked if I could get a photo with him and he smiled sagely and said, “erm… no.”

Best piece of band merch I’ve seen in a minute: Christian metal band Extol has a t-shirt that says “God bless death metal.”

Make that five rejections for 2025, baby!
One of my writing goals in 2025 was to finally start sending some of my stories out to places, and today I got my third rejection email of the year. It’s not much but it’s a start.

Now this? This is a fucking prog-rock album right here. You know you’re in good hands when they can drop a twenty-minute epic that breezes by in what feels like five, and the new drummer is a graceful powerhouse of a player. Love it love it love it.

There was an aspiring singer two years behind me by the name of Taylor Swift. No idea what happened to her, though.
Who was in your high school graduating class, +/- two years, that would be of interest?

For example, I took a basketball class and graduated w/all-time 8th man Jud Buechler (look it up), and may have followed Stephanie Seymour (not sure if she still WENT to school after I moved there).

Filling out a survey about the Colorado Rockies and for the question, “why are you a fan?” one of the answer choices is, hilariously, “the current on-field performance of the team.”

Listening to a lunchtime program on the local jazz radio station called LUNCHTIME! and the DJ is an old man who clearly loves saying the name of the show because he leans into it every time he gets the chance.

I know it’s part of the gigging lifestyle so I can’t fault him for it, but a jazz drummer I love is playing at one of the nightclubs here next month and I can’t go because it’s on a Monday night at *9pm* and, uh, I’m already in bed by then.

bad writing can lowkey be beautiful. not because the language is beautiful but because bad writing can reveal things about the writer that "good writing" would know to conceal or distract from. sometimes when reading bad writing I feel a terrible, thrilling closeness to the author.

I’ve never been published and I tend to think most of my stuff is absolute shit, but I can say with utmost certainty that I’ve never written a sentence as bad as Olivia Nuzzi’s “bullet” sentence.

Writing in a coffee shop while my lady is at an appointment. A guy notices the hoodie I’m wearing. “Is that Powell’s, the bookstore?” I said yes. “Man, I love that place. Coolest bookstore in the world.”

Gravity’s Rainbow and Geddy Lee’s Big Beautiful Book of Bass
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

I sincerely hope this happens again this year because I wanna see that vibe *shift*.
Someone snuck “Every Year, Every Christmas” by Luther Vandross into the virtual work holiday party playlist and, hooboy, did the mood change when that song started up.

I know the music streaming apps like to do “new music Friday” and all, but my favorite kind of new music Friday is getting an email from my father about a new song he wrote where he forgot to send the MP3 attachment.

takes an unbelievable level of failed skill checks to be a loser if you're rich. you have unrestrained time and resources to hone any skill in the world and to verifiably support your local community but instead you're a selfish spineless blight on society. no excuse for it

Walked down the street to pick up a pizza from my neighborhood spot and the guys there were so excited. “Man, that was a good spread of toppings!” said one. “When I pulled it out of the oven I was like, ‘damn, that’s a fine looking pizza,’” said the other. After opening the box, I have to agree.

Not at all the most important aspect of all this, but it has been a very fun couple of days learning that I am a far better writer than a large swath of wealthy elites in this country.
