No they did not gamble any more than the US did — they contracted terms under a treaty, the most recent version of which they negotiated with the guy who has now sucker-punched them and us by breaking it for no credible reason with these catastrophic tariffs

Again, another day has gone by & the presidents of major research universities are deafeningly silent in the face of existential threats because of the potential end of federal funding. It's like watching the failure to stand up to Scott Walker & the Wisconsin GOP for a decade, on a national scale.

This feels ominous. I find it hard to see this as anything but a continuation of the expansion of Bishop Barron's brand and ego. All part of a grand marketing plan hatched long ago. WOF as an NRM (New Religious Movement).

3 of my top 4 most-played albums this year are 2024 releases. I consider that an accomplishment.

Truly the zenith of the art of advertising. I can't stand commercials today...they are so shallow and uncreative.
Can we just be honest…commercials peaked with the “Where’s the beef?” lady 😔

I am not very brand or product loyal, but I am dreading the end of the Spiced Coke supply. Why would they do away with such a satisfying flavour? I can't deal with regular Coke flavours anymore.

Isn't this what makes an influencer an influencer? If they had to stick to facts, nobody would listen.
Yikes. No surprise. Still, yikes!

There's a million reasons, but most of them have to do with memes and not reality, sadly
A failed president who incited a coup attempt and then was found liable of sexual assault and then was convicted of felonies won the popular vote and electoral college. I still haven’t seen a satisfactory explanation. Probably never will.

"Over the last 10 years or so, a cultural revolution has been imposed on this country from the top down. Its ideas originated in the academy, and it’s been carried out of the academy by elite-educated activists and journalists and academics." Um, ok... www.chronicle.com/article/acad...

This is exactly right. Elon fooled lots of people into thinking that his acquisition of Twitter was about protecting free speech—it was always about reengineering a public square into a reactionary echo chamber. Which is why he’s flirting with running the same play again with MSNBC.

Still collecting books/articles/chapters by non-TT historians for our 2024 lists! I assemble these the weekend after Thanksgiving, so you've still got time to get things in.

My daughter on classical guitar and I on lute recorded this lovely duet by Francesco da Milano and Ioannes Matelart in 2022. It's a 16th c tune. I hope to feel better so I can play the lute again and upload videos. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy this!

Hump day inspiration from Schopenhauer: suffering, be it major or minor, is our default state. If we manage to relieve some of our suffering, we soon become bored and fall into suffering again. Happiness is when we forget for a moment the omnipresence of the blind will underlying us and all things.

I’m going to say something historians rarely say.

We haven’t been here before.

We haven’t had a near-authoritarian takeover of our government.

Admittedly, we don’t know what comes next.

There’s a wide array of options.

But know that in the US, this is new ground. And none of this is normal.

Seems like a pretty generous review of Peterson's new book, but it points to an important question: is Peterson's take on the Bible as a moral guidebook simply that of liberal Protestantism, but geared toward conservative reaction rather than progressivism? www.christianitytoday.com/2024/11/jord...

Review: The popular influencer’s latest book, “We Who Wrestle with God,” is ambitious, insightful, and slippery on theological truth.

Anti-woke really hammered people's brains. Year after year of Libs-of-TikTok style outrage bait and targeting, 24/7. I think we underestimate how damaging that is to the moral sense of the average person. To any capability for compassion that is not self-interested. It creates a callus on the soul.
