Shameful. I cite CCDH’s work constantly. Imran Ahmed is a leading voice
raising the alarm on online harms, algorithms, and accountability. This is fascism, censorship & authoritarian overreach.

This is a pretty depressing read. Very few empowering suggestions, let alone solutions. And add to that how passive and (self-)isolated progressive U.S. civil society is, we could be in for a long dark period.

What about Europe? It is mentioned quite a bit, with one primary focus: European identity and the alleged elites and minority governments that restrict core liberties and democratic processes. This is extremely close to JD Vance’s Munich speech.

"Science is being destroyed across many agencies" say federal researchers.

For my latest @nature.com piece, I spoke to 19 different scientists across EPA, NOAA, NIH, NASA, and USGS to document how science is being dismantled across US federal agencies.
Dismantling of US federal agencies will ‘destroy science’
From NASA to the National Institutes of Health, federal agencies conduct research that universities cannot. Agency scientists speak out about the irreplaceable facilities, institutional knowledge and ...

DISASTROUS. This means they will send people to horrific situations with no due process — in direct violation of promises the Solicitor General made to the Court in previous cases.

This greenlights sending people to be enslaved in Libya or tortured in any random foreign country.
#BREAKING: Over a (sharp) public dissent from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS clears the way for the Trump administration to remove migrants to third countries *without* giving them an additional opportunity to contest whether they face persecution or other forms of mistreatment there:

Freedom of speech and the right of due process - unless you "create a ruckus," then you'll be disappeared by masked agents of the state.

Fundamental constitutional protections - officially suspended for foreign nationals. They'll remain in place for US citizens until the regime decides otherwise.
Marco Rubio on Rumeysa Ozturk: "We revoked her visa ... once you've lost your visa, you're no longer legally in the United States ... if you come into the US as a visitor and create a ruckus for us, we don't want it. We don't want it in our country. Go back and do it in your country."

Fascism places emotion over reason. Words become just tools to achieve the vision of the Leader. In our post-truth world, this takes the special form of the inversion of meaning: fascists call other people "fascists" and antisemites call other people "antisemites"

Again, incredibly shortsighted. The Minerva program was created literally because the Pentagon realized that military knowledge wasn’t enough- they needed outside expertise. that hasn’t changed, and this decision makes all of us less safe.
NEW: The Minerva Research Initiative, established by the Pentagon to fund social science relevant to national security, is being gutted. Dozens of researchers studying threats from extremist groups, misinformation or climate change have received notices that their grants are being terminated.
