Was listening to a favourite song It's Better To Have and Don't Need than Need (And Don't Have), which is true when you're young and prob still true when you're old. From Wikipedia I learned that Don Covay wrote Chain Of Fools for Aretha Franklin. What a legacy. music.youtube.com/watch?v=wQnm...

How long does it take for discredited technologies to recover?
Like, suppose AI became, not human-level, but finally a useful, reliable tool?

BBC series is making me wish I had never heard of Kate Clanchy 😱.
In Britain the unpardonable offence is hypocrisy. Don't write a book that comes across to readers as racist and anti-LGBT while presenting yourself as an enlightened liberal. Full-on bigotry, no probs. It won't provoke such anger.

(Lord) Stuart Rose is a very good grocer and from behind the till, it can seem that "only business creates wealth" #BBCR4Today
This is the sneaky way that conservative economists deny what is obvious to most people: that the public sector creates value and vitally supports the private sector.

The brain needs delays for time perception and motor programming. Axons are too fast. We look to collective neuronal dynamics for longer delays and slower oscillations. The slowest-propagating neural process I know is migraine. Do migraine-like processes provide delay in healthy brain function?

Not a great look when taking jewels off better-off asylum seekers is the most socialist thing Starmer's government can think of doing.

We really have reached peak reductionism if we are gonna argue that a few hundred atoms in a single fertilised egg caused the Holocaust and WW2.

Hitler's DNA should go straight into the incinerator. I have already been told more about it than I ever want to know.

We need animal experiments to develop new antibiotics to replace those that no longer work because they have been over-used on animals in factory farms. It's not just science that is locked into the exploitation of other species, it's our whole society.

Thanks, Father, you don't need to go into the theological details of the doctrine of the resurrection of the body. I just want to know whether there is sex in heaven.

This is brilliant. An 'applied' view of #chemistry reminiscent of 19th/early 20th century textbooks which were all about how humans could use things and what they might do to you. Great thread too. Everyone ignores the OP's request not to nitpick.
please don't @ me like "actually cerium is unique among the lanthanides for its +4 oxidation state"

I play music and have a physical science background, so I am interested in this. But I am definitely a tourist here. So am I being unfair if I suggest this field is awash with data but still thirsty for real knowledge? Brains make rhythms in circumstances X, Y and Z but why? Do they *need* to?

Such a warm feeling from paying a huge water bill and knowing that Southern Water's bosses and shareholders won't have to suffer for all those leaks and sewage discharges they were responsible for.

To be clear, what is being proposed here is to axe the main mechanism for getting Britain’s homes insulated - which is by FAR the best way to reduce household energy bills in the long term 🤦‍♂️

…and also, just incidentally, an absolute non-negotiable requirement for meeting UK climate targets 😬🥵☠️

"Your parcel is out for delivery" doesn't mean you will get it today. They chuck everything on the van, deliver as much as they can, and take the rest back to the depot.

It's 10.5C outside and I have noticed the heating on for the first time this autumn. Our renovated Victorian house can no longer keep itself above 20C by insulation alone.
