It is possible that some authors write best when given a completely free hand. But I'd hate to think anyone wrote badly just because they were following my brief. I wasn't working on a scholarly journal. It was a newspaper, the Times Higher.

I hate to disagree with Wilde, but I have edited the writing of many academics. Some are just wonderful, natural writers. Others, though supreme experts in their field, could not write their way out of a tickbox on a Captcha screen.

AIUI British kettles (240V, up to 3kW) are faster than 110V models.

My mother always dropped veg and spuds into boiling water. Allegedly it inactivates enzymes that might otherwise destroy vitamin C. Theory popularised by post-WW2 cookery writers like Philip Harben.

My first job after university was in the BBC unit that produced Science in Action and other science programmes. Very sad to see it go - though it has had an incredible long run. Hats off to Roland.
