UU minister trying to love the hell out of this world. RevJo.UU on TT.
Watching Sen. Booker is reminding me of Sen Mike Gravel reading part of the Pentagon papers out loud, which got them into the congressional record. The letters of worried Americans are being heard.

Disruption is all they seem to understand—so that’s exactly what they’re getting. For 14 hours, @booker.senate.gov has been on the Senate floor, speaking truth within the rules. This cannot be business as usual when our democracy’s on the line. Thank you, senator.

Numbing and rest aren't the same thing. Numbing is a "pause," a break, then you pick up where you left off. Rest=renewal, restoration. It's a reset. Right now, we probably need both. My numbing is through Stardew Valley. What's yours?

Warnock: They are busy attacking ordinary people. They don’t understand what it’s like to ration your prescription drugs or what it’s like to try to figure out how to afford groceries. In the words of that prophet who just spoke at The Super Bowl: They not like us

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

A tale of two scandalous Justice Department firings, and how WaPo covered each. Which is to say: today, not at all. Democracy dies in broad daylight.

There is a space between hope and hopeless. Not resigned. Not despair. A quiet resolve to do as much good as one can do in what will be terrible circumstances.

The glee with which some Christians fantasize about watching people who don’t share their beliefs be tortured in the afterlife … well, it explains some things about the current political world.

Jeff Bezos never wanted this cartoon to become public.

He killed it, and as a result, pulitzer prize editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit.

Make sure everyone sees this cartoon.

While we’re banning books…

Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar.

This is your reminder that no matter how much hard work you’ve been doing in therapy, no matter how much your self-differentiation has improved, the holidays are NOT your Therapy Final Exam. You will probably not always be calm, centered, emotionally mature, etc. with your family. That’s okay.

Thank you @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social as always.

This, this, this:

"Until men engage earnestly & honestly with the pervasiveness of sexual assault and the aspects of the culture that celebrate and normalise it, not enough will change."

Assault. Abuse. Harassment. Objectification.

All of it.

I love the Jacqui Lawson advent calendar. Every morning, something sweet and whimsical to fuel me up for my day.

Can someone create something similar to count down to Nov. 3, 2026? Some of us will really need it.

Progressive Texans know we have multiple nightmares coming. Both the national inauguration, plus the Tx Lege returns to session.

Cue “Jaws” theme music. (We know, we should play the Rocky theme, but reality is reality.)

Forget “religion and politics” as the 2 most controversial topics.
It’s “children in restaurants” and “barking dogs at home.”

I love “O Holy Night” not for the soaring melody (ok, I love that, too) but because it was written by an atheist/socialist, a Jewish composer, and a Unitarian. All of them abolitionists.

Absolutely this. If you don't know where to start, here's a free tip: Reach out to your local Unitarian Universalists. I'm not proselytizing here, you don't need to join the church, but I guarantee they'll be able to give you a reference to someone who needs some more hands for social justice.
It bums me out that so many organizations are desperate for volunteers/energy and people are like "there's no place for civic engagement"
Exactly this. Civil society just needs engagement with the community, which can be so difficult but very worth it.

People are often surprised (and embarrassed) by how overwhelming their grief is when a pet dies. It’s because it’s so constant. You see their bowl, or hear a rustle and think it’s them. It’s like an intensive in mourning.

Gender-affirming care for youth happens in so many ways people have no understanding of. My teen cisgender daughter survived cancer as a child. The radiation messed up her repro organs - she had to take estrogen to avoid going into menopause as a teen. Whether transgender or cis, it can be needed.
