And you know what else I saw? A commitment to finding joy whenever it becomes available, even if it’s just having dinner together at the end of a long, hard day.

That’s what I saw. They knew “terrible” was coming. But they did not despair, though they assume it will be worse than before.

I was with several groups at the El Paso border last week. Groups that work with migrants, in shelters, educating about rights, and also working for change.

But it seems clear that some interpret it as “no need to wait to see ‘infidels’ suffer - let’s make it happen in the here and now.”

There is a concept in evangelicalism called “the now and not yet.” It is usually meant to say that we can experience a taste of “heaven” right now by being loving people.

He has been doing this for years and years. I think it’s a badge of honor with him.

So we have to learn how to both share our traumatic story and hear the traumatic story of others.
