Man, this is terrible. One of the brightest minds on the left - learned a ton from reading him over the years. Viewpoint was a revelation.
Really sad to hear about the passing of Asad Haider. Such a brilliant mind and such a sweet guy. And a great lover of Tiki cocktails

I saw one or two operas in high school, but until tonight I don't think I'd seen a professional musical on stage. ALW's 'Phantom of the Opera' is a lot of fun.
(and having seen the silent film on the silver screen, with accompaniment, a few weeks ago made it even better.)

finished with the project of putting insulating plastic on all the windows.
happy to be done with the less than delightful experience of removing years-old plastic, which crumbled in my hands as I held and manipulated it.

becoming a bit chauvinist when I entertain thoughts like "if you don't work in healthcare, you're not really working a job. have fun at adult daycare tomorrow."
I live inside the burnout machine, man. everything else, even working in the kitchen, is nerf life.

Thursday night I woke to use the toilet, tried to flip on the hallway light but it wouldn't turn. "Better replace the bulb tomorrow", I thought.
Friday morn the light works fine. I'm thinking that I dreamt the bathroom trip and that they're right: light switches don't work in your dreams.

hell, I thought, I wouldn't pick a fight with myself no matter who I was, and kept walking

zero is prime number.

(I was dreaming about this last night, and today I couldn't figure out if my subconscious was trolling me or if I'd read this argument somewhere. turns out it's the latter, and follows only half-jokingly from the fact that the zero ring is a prime ideal in the integers)

big late breaking news: the market monitor for the largest energy grid in the u.s., covering much of the midwest and mid-atlantic, has called to block new data centers connections to the grid, saying current course of growth assures regular blackouts
No more PJM data centers unless they can be reliably served: market monitor
The PJM Interconnection’s market monitor urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to rule that large data centers can only come online if the grid operator can still meet reliability metrics.

host: And that's the Daily Double! "You want it all but you can't have THIS"?
contestant: It's it.
host: Please answer in the form of a question.
contestant: What is it?
host: Correct, but you can't grab it.

fondly remembering the most perverse non-immoral thing I've done: once when I was a child, I let a mosquito suck itself full on my upper arm, then I let it fly away unsquashed.
(out of curiosity, to watch the whole process uninterrupted)

This is my yearly PSA that, no matter how old you are, you should have a basic health directive and will. The forms are free online in California. The number of senior citizens in my neighborhood with no directives and no plan who are already a little off the rails is staggering. A short rant 1/

preference for primarily low-stimulation, solitary activities and persist negative mood/low motivation—introversion and depression—harmonize quite well.
given that I've known I have both for 25+ years, I am no foolin' a bit embarrassed that I'd not considered their synergy before tonight.

I still don't know if my preferred second-best politics (communism) is compatible with pessimism, but permit me to offer the pessimistic perspective, which I think has a lot going for it:
humans can only ever choose among Unpredictability, Oppression, or Poverty.

Anyway, this turned into a ramble, but the whole point is that I think a lot of the discontent currently expressed in economic terms is only expressed that way because those are the only terms available. Taking it too literally & responding technocratically is a mistake. Deeper shit is afoot. </fin>

looks like 5" (25 cm) of snow tomorrow, followed by a week of sub-freezing temperatures.
this will almost certainly clear my personal bar for the beginning of winter: the first lasting snow.
oh bother

was all set to read 'My Brilliant Friend' until I saw the 7+ families in the index of characters. I'll be ready for that kind of commitment in 2026, I hope, but not now. 'The Sound and the Fury'—public domain as of this year—you're up!

while it didn't reach the heights of peak Solondz ('Dollhouse', 'Happiness', and arguably 'Storytelling'), 'Dark Horse' was still great. wish I'd've seen it around the same time as '40-Year-Old Virgin'.
it's always surprising when Solondz gets financing, here's to hoping he can keep scaring up money

Should I buy a suit?
My job does not require one, nor can I imagine ever applying for one that did.
I have no siblings or other close family members who might marry, nor do I have any friends. (It is possible that I could make friends in the future, of course.)

people's reactions to things—news stories, movies, music, etc—doesn't color my perception or sour my mood. if bad people like good things, or good people like good things for the wrong reasons or in the wrong way, who cares?
no, it's people's reactions to people's reactions that grind my gears.
