With a personal connection, @willbunch.bsky.social writes forcefully and elegantly about the mass shooting at Brown and our nation’s great shame - guns everywhere.
A mass shooting at my alma mater Brown University hit hard, proving no community is safe from senseless violence in a land with more guns than people

Trump added insult to injury by claiming there is "nothing you can do." We can do a lot about guns

Mass shooting at Brown U.: When gun heartbreak comes home | Will Bunch
A mass shooting at my alma mater is a gutting reminder that no one is safe until we tackle America's gun crisis.

New Jersey law forbids civilian boards from holding real investigatory powers over police and from issuing subpoenas. Officials in many NJ cities want to give boards subpoena powers, but Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has so far said she opposes that.
New Jersey Cities Are Pressing Resistant State Officials for Civilian Police Oversight
Local officials in Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton want civilian agencies that can investigate police and issue subpoenas. But they keep running into the state’s Democratic leaders.

Yes, @gregsargent.bsky.social is exactly right here, and that is a far bigger story than just Kilmar himself.

It is about who we, as the United States writ large, are. It cannot be that which Trump and Miller are.
There's ample evidence that Trump/Miller saw Abrego Garcia as a test for the broader MAGA project. Miller hopes to carve out power for Trump to remove people with zero legal constraints. JD Vance's dishonesty has been reprehensible. It all now looks even worse. 4/

This is lovely. All can be true
-There is a real need for internal change in higher ed to counter tendencies toward groupthink & monoculture
-The Fox/MAGA caricature is absurd and unrecognizable from the inside
-The authoritarian assault would make things vastly worse by destroying academic freedom
Column worth reading, by former two-term GOP governor who discovers that Harvard is not the hellscape of intolerance and group-think that the MAGA and its media are constantly telling him about.

(Think of parallels in so many other realms.)

someone tell the California ACLU who is disproportionately more likely to be killed in traffic accidents including those involving people under the influence
The California ACLU is staunchly opposed to the ignition interlock device program and is a big reason that it has not been expanded. Despite the fact that California heavily subsidizes the cost for low-income drunk drivers, the ACLU says that the program is a form of "racialized wealth extraction."

We put forward a straightforward bill: extend the health care tax credits to prevent premiums from skyrocketing.

Because Congressional Republicans voted down our bill, millions will see their premiums double — or lose their insurance altogether.

Republicans voted for a trillion dollars in tax breaks for the 1%, but they couldn't vote to protect 20 million Americans from seeing a doubling — on average — of their health care premiums.

Pathetic.

Trump and his propagandists ran a multi-year campaign to redefine “censorship” and leverage false accusations of it to regain power as they redefine history and reality. As far as I can tell, most folks on the left are either unaware, don’t care, or don’t know how to respond.
