Councilmember Ysabel Jurado has introduced a motion to protect journalists covering protests. The motion: LAPD will create a public campaign on how to obtain LAPD-issued press passes along w/ signing MoUs between press groups and the city to create an agreement on conduct at protests.
Councilmember Ysabel Jurado Introduces Motion to Bolster Protections for Journalists Covering Protests LOS ANGELES – Today, Councilmember Ysabel Jurado introduced a motion to bolster protections for journalists covering protests and other public demonstrations in Los Angeles, ensuring they can report freely and safely. The motion follows a federal lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department, citing multiple instances in which officers fired less-lethal projectiles at journalists covering protests. A judge subsequently issued a Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting such targeting, reaffirming the critical role of the press in keeping the public informed and enabling civic participation. “When the press can freely and safely do its job, the public can participate fully in our democracy,” said Councilmember Ysabel Jurado. “Our responsibility as a City is to make sure those who report the truth are protected, not punished, for doing their jobs.” State law does not require specific press credentials for journalists covering protests. LAPD Media Guidelines note that press badges are “optional tools,” but ambiguity in verifying press status has led to constitutional violations, costly settlements, and federal court intervention, highlighting the urgent need for clear, standardized guidelines to protect members of the press and safeguard taxpayer dollars. Councilmember Jurado’s motion calls on the LAPD to develop a public campaign explaining how members of the press can obtain an LAPD press badge. It also calls for collaboration with several City departments to create a Memorandum of Understanding between the LAPD, the Los Angeles Press Club, and the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. The MOU would establish a shared code of conduct for First Amendment demonstrations, setting clear, operational standards for how LAPD engages with journalists. The city wants to turn the north half of one of the two main parks in Reseda in to a storm water capture park. This is the area where families meet to have parties with their families. Any given weekend multiple tents would be up. We were promised a splash pad. That’s not there.

Anecdotally I’m hearing our aggressive red card campaign has made a difference. It’s no where near enough, but folks are using the resources we are supplying to help defend employees and have a response plan. How to convince every other nc to follow suit?

My neighborhood council is on pace to offer red cards to every single service business in Reseda. Every restaurant, every mechanic, every beauty store, every grocery store, every gas station. And we did this within a week.

Megaevent organizers must be in full-out panic mode right about now.

I see some reporting that "individuals whose entry serves U.S. national interests" includes special exceptions for World Cup and Olympic athletes but I can't imagine that also includes fans who want to travel here
The Proclamation fully restricts and limits the entry of nationals from 12 countries found to be deficient with regards to screening and vetting and determined to pose a very high risk to the United States: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The Proclamation partially restricts and limits the entry of nationals from 7 countries who also pose a high level of risk to the United States: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The Proclamation includes exceptions for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, certain visa categories, and individuals whose entry serves U.S.

The city is proposing to layoff 1600+ civilian workers due to the negligence of the Mayor's Office and the incompetence of the Police Officers who are being sued. -Proposing cuts to 403 civilian jobs from LAPD just to backfill them with Sworn officers who have cash OT considerations and are generally paid more than their civilian counterpart. Zero accountability to sworn nor are there any layoffs for those who caused much of this financial crisis. Higher overall cost, cash OT, expertise gap, are just some of the many issues with this. The Mayor and Chief have complained about the lack of new officers yet you want to take away actual police work to put them into administrative positions. -Proposing cuts to 196 positions from Transportation in a time when the infrastructure for transit and transit related services should be expanded due to all the future events. LA is already gridlocked 24/7. Proposing to cut the funding and staff will result in even more inadequate traffic planning, reduced service in quality and more frequent delays just in time for major events. -Proposing cuts to 80 positions in Animal Services when the already strained department is handling record numbers of animal related complaints and overflowing shelters -NOT proposing cuts to the Mayor's office. There are currently 94 filled positions at the Mayor's Office and no cuts are being made there. In fact, 36 positions additional positions are budgeted "as needed." Something I think about a lot is that Democratic protectionism around corruption has led us to this moment in many ways. The failure to aggressively root it out, leaves them open to attacks and what about moments. It’s a normalization of expectations and reactions that have lowered the bar.
