Crisis in science has previously turned out to be useful. The end of the Byzantine Empire and the exodus of scholars led to the Renaissance; the exodus from Nazi Germany led to a significant boost of science in America. It can be a personal and national tragedy, but for science, shakeups are useful.
If people think American scientists are somehow going to land in Europe, I've got news for you about the difference between millions and billions.
