Flywheels were once used as energy storage for 'gyrobuses'.
Spinning disks at 3000 RPM would drive a generator for an electric motor, and in turn the generator could be supplied externally to spin up the flywheel. Lack of range, weight and reliability issues plagued their only implementation.
