It follows that arbitrary restrictions on who is allowed to contribute (from racist prejudice, sexism, nativism etc) reduce the good things, or at best, displace them to somewhere else. People pursuing these restrictions are not saving the best for themselves, they are destroying the pipeline.

Two axioms:
1) talent/smarts/grit are pretty evenly distributed (across race, country, gender, etc).
2) good things happen if you can collect critical masses of such people in one place.

The errors occurring routinely in news stories about LA are indicative of a few big, unfortunate problems:
• Too much news coverage is determined by national political speech.
• Too many news reporters remain on X, a site feeding them propaganda.

If the NIH gets messed up, there is no alternative. Not just in the US, but globally. It is by far the biggest engine of health research in the world. Which is why the idea that US scientists can just do their work elsewhere is a little fanciful.
