This video is for Doug Ford, and all those in my replies saying bike lanes "stop emergency vehicles from getting to their destination". They *allow* emergency vehicles to get to their destination, as seen here on Adelaide. They were designed with emergency services in mind.

Writing in today's Globe @mbonsma.bsky.social and Sarah Elton reflect on the gap between Bill 212 and facts (about congestion, business success, safety and more) and the broader implications for governance.

Opinion: The bike lane debate isn’t a war on cycling – it’s a war on data
Ripping up bike lanes based on misplaced frustration is bad policy

“It is so much easier to prevent road trauma than it is to treat it,” Christopher Yarnell @uoft.bsky.social’s Dept of Medicine

When it comes to prevention, the research is clear: Bike lanes reduce collisions between vehicles & bicycles.

On the top: a traditional crosswalk where the sidewalk essentially disappears into the road for crossing.

Don’t remember being this disillusioned with politics before. Governments on every level seem completely ineffectual and some are just simply malicious as well. Hard to see a way out from all of this.

In summary, Ford's bike lane removals will, according to a new City Hall report:

- Cost $75 million in direct costs and sunk costs.
- Make traffic much, much worse for at least nine months during construction to remove lanes
- Have minimal long-term impact on car travel times.

And here are new and updated ridership numbers for Bloor, University and Yonge bike lanes. Increases as high as 656%.

The report also says travel times would get WORSE for drivers during the construction work necessary to remove the bike lanes. Long-term, staff project "likely minimal improvements in travel time" for drivers once lanes are removed.

The supplementary report on Doug Ford's bike lane ban bill is now available. City staff say it could cost $48 million in provincial tax money to remove bike lanes. And city would lose out on $27 million invested to install the infrastructure. www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis... (PDF)

kids seek independence and freedom, not an unwalkable, unsafe world where it's hard to get around on your own.

i moved back to toronto proper just over a year ago. it's quite far from downtown - but having 24/7 frequent transit, shops, events, friends, and libraries in walking distance is amazing.

Wat!?
Pasternak asks if it makes sense for young people to vote on things like speed bumps when they don't drive. Transportation GM says Council recently waived polling requirements for traffic calming, so it's not really relevant. (But also, 16 year olds can drive!)

The extreme othering of individuals who don’t drive a car is exemplified by the way bike couriers and food delivery personnel are treated.

There’s no rational explanation for this, except that it’s simply not how people “like me” get around.
John Tory couldn’t even properly defend some of his good (there is some) legacy yesterday on 1010. Explicitly doesn’t care that Yonge bike lanes are used by bike couriers to delivery food to some of the very people who object to them. There’s an immoral clarity there on the record. A disgraced man.

Driving at a slower speed is not congestion or grid lock.

There seems to be a lot of confusion around this.

These lies are going unchecked because we have no proper data to counter it. The Transportation Tomorrow survey from 2022 still has not been released and the Toronto has not made its cycle count data public in years.

We need the city to release the data ASAP.

Banning bike lanes is a gender issue. Plenty of research has shown that women (and others with intersectional identities or caregiving responsibilities) are less likely to bike when they have to share the lane with motor vehicles. In Ottawa women make up only 1/3 of cyclists in the city. 1/

Doug Ford has already chosen the lanes he said he will need data for to chosen which lanes to remove. Decision-based evidence-making at its finest.
