26 Dec: The feast of St Stephen, the first Christian martyr remembered for his charity, is also called Boxing Day, from the custom of giving alms or gift boxes to the poor and to workers in thanks. In the “Calendar of Flowers,” purple heather is his dedicated flower. #BoxingDay

King Wenceslas of Bohemia, famed for his charity, ruled in the 10th c. A Christmas carol tells how he goes out on the Feast of St Stephen, our #BoxingDay, with food and firewood for a freezing peasant, his page following in his steps. A legend of #kindness in the coldest season.

"Is a River Alive?" by @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social is the most significant book that I read this year. The lyrical writing braids activism, indigenous and western science, and personal narrative, like streams throughout a flood plane joining into one roaring river of a book, full of hope.

If Network NEWSCASTS, and their Late Night Shows, are almost 100% Accurate about a Pathological Liar and Convicted Felon who Incited an Insurrection, tried to Steal a Fair Election and is Covering up Sex Crimes against Children, shouldn't his Disgraceful Presidency be terminated? I say, YES!

Do both.

And if solar parks are built near villages or towns, then offer the people who are potentially affected free electricity to offset their concerns.

Solar panels are not nuclear power stations. They can be removed with little environmental impact and can actually benefit biodiversity.
The solution is right above us. Solar panels on existing buildings, car parks, and along highways generate clean power without sacrificing farmland or wild spaces. Let's use our built world first. #Renewables #Innovation

Betty’s family announced her passing and has requested privacy during this time. In lieu of flowers, they’ve asked that those wishing to honor her legacy consider donations to Betty Reid Soskin Middle School and to a forthcoming film documenting her remarkable life.

We’d like to share a remembrance for Betty Reid Soskin, the oldest serving National Park Service ranger in the country, who has passed away. Her life and work helped preserve history, expand whose stories are told, and inspire generations to come.

What a shameful question.

First, it is not what Congress "asked for." It is what a federal statute REQUIRES.

Second, WTF does "spirit but not intent" even mean?

CBS bent a knee and paid Trump, it has a new owner who wants to please Trump, and sadly this is the result.
BRENNAN: This isn't everything you asked for just yet, but would you acknowledge that they are complying with the spirit if not the intent of your law?

MASSIE: No. They're flouting the spirit and the letter of the law. It's very troubling the posture that they've taken.

Other woods were used for the wassail cup, depending on local custom: ash in Cornwall and Somerset, green maple in Gloucestershire, and mulberry in Staffordshire. Rosemary is named in The Wassail Song by Bramley & Stainer, and may reflect a Yorkshire or Oxfordshire tradition.

"Our wassail cup is made
Of the rosemary tree,
And so is your beer
Of the best barley" - from a traditional Wassail Song.
Wassailing is an old tradition of going from door-to-door singing at Christmas. The singers offer a drink from the wassail cup, and in return are given gifts.

22 Dec: Evergreen and often in bloom at #Christmas, rosemary is woven into wreaths and garlands as a symbol of hope, fertility, and remembrance. In old custom, the wassail cup was sometimes made from rosemary wood, and stirred with a fragrant sprig before being shared. #folklore

It's an invisible need… an invisible center… helping invisible people. Meanwhile, I’m haunted by the invisible impact of the insatiable greed that’s so widespread (and sadly, celebrated) in our multi-millionaire and billionaire class.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.
