A friend's favourite Halloween story is when they - a teenager in the 90s - went trick or treating with friends, and stopped at an old guy's house who rolled his eyes to see teens, told them to "wait a fucking minute" and came back, tossing packs of cigarettes and bottles of beer in to their bags.

It's cold and rainy and we had THREE trick-or-treaters (a spiderman in a winter coat, a unicorn in a winter coat and a baby holding a wee pumpkin bucket).

One of my kids and I are taking turns reading chapters of House of Leaves but we managed to lose the book someplace inside the house, which feels like a thing that would happen in House of Leaves.
It was under a chair, anyhow, so now I have to read my chapters today.

Made the mistake of looking at the town Facebook group and I have "learned" so many "things':
1. solar energy is a scam and is bad for the environment
2. conservatives are being hate-crimed by leftists, of whom there are lots and lots in my tiny rural town
3. the only good electric car is a Tesla.

My parents - who are in their 70s - have sprawling comfortable outside seats underneath the branches of some mysterious sheltering berrying tree and endless amounts of boxed white wine - and their casual friendly hospitality makes me feel that my natural state is "modestly drunk at my parents".

My youngest child bought a 1970s bartending book at a library sale and made the interesting discovery that drinking habits and tastes have changed radically and that people also used to put a lot of egg whites in their cocktails.

I need very specific book recommendations! My MIL is starting a short course of chemo to try and extend her life (she has stage 4 pancreatic cancer), so I'm loading up my old Kindle for her (despite my feelings about Amazon - it's what I have.). She loves country music, romance, small towns. (1/2)
