Reminder that

(a) the current share of U.S. workers in the public sector (working for government agencies) is at historic lows

(b) It was not until the 'post'-Civil Rights era, when Black workers gained footing in public sector jobs, policymakers began to frame public sector workers as "waste"

Measles is not trending on Bluesky. But it's quickly spreading in the US. Likely way more cases than the 600+ the CDC reported last Friday. Why do I think that? Well, measles kills on average 1 per 1000. We've seen 3 deaths. It is highly likely that we're undercounting this tightly knit community.

Sending anyone from this country to a foreign gulag, particularly without a court hearing, should rightfully end a presidency. Full stop.

As he sat down beside me
at our department meeting
my work friend asked
“still wearing the mask?”
and though I was tempted
to gesture at all the seats
left empty
by our many coworkers
who were out sick,
instead, I just said: “yes.”

Both sides were never the same.

Too many folks who are just arriving to the work of resistance are way too comfortable telling folks who’ve lived this work what they should be doing. Yall got too much dip on your chip and you need to do way more self work

Colorblindness is a tool for resegregation. Coming for the data is the way to delegitimize the basis of the pursuit of equality.
Annual population estimates by age and sex for 1990-2000 are still available here, but annual estimates by age, sex, and race/ethnicity have been taken down. Truly unbelievable www.census.gov/data/tables/...

These 1990s: National Tables are from Population Estimates.

For some, I'm guessing the reality of their "protest vote" is setting in, and it's easier to lash out than do any self-reflection.

USAID.gov is down. Why is this concerning? Trump has no legal authority to eliminate a congressionally funded independent agency. The work of USAID is vital, and if this can happen to them, it can happen to any of us.

Numerous studies have found a relationship between childhood socioeconomic status (CSES) and health in adulthood. In a new paper, I find this relationship varies across states, suggesting state context plays an important role in shaping health across the life course: tinyurl.com/bdactvkz

🚨PIs of Training Grants and Programs, ESPECIALLY training grants that support students from historically excluded groups (T32s and T34s, IMSD, MARC, PREP, MOSAIC, etc.)🚨

We need to push back on the loss of information and the disappearance of websites about these resources.

Hi, it’s me. I’m that scientist 🥺
Somewhere in the U.S., there’s a scientist staring at their NSF/NIH grant application wondering why they bother. This post is for you. Science and society both need you. Hang in there and know there is a whole community supporting you.

My understanding is the spending freeze has been rescinded but not the EO on DEIA so a lot of research grants will still be targeted? The confusion is the point at this point.
