As the piece reflects, this has been a year when those with the most vocal anti-asylum views were visible & vocal. Thousands of those v sympathetic to asylum seekers & refugees are part of a quiet movement seeking to play a practical part in welcoming asylum seekers & refugees around the country

A sixth of public - 10 million - report being very sympathetic to people crossing the Channel in boats. Up to half have a fair amount of sympathy. A broad majority want to play our part protecting refugees in a better managed way. Contact between refugees & local people should be part of that

Wonderful article, just lovely.
I've been aware for a while of the work by faith and other community groups to support people seeking asylum. So I asked the @refugeecouncil.bsky.social where there was really vigorous community support. They said Northallerton. Here's what I found when I went there: as.ft.com/r/b3449fbd-3...

We are nearing the darkest day of all. No, we are not referring to the state of the English Test team, but rather the lack of daylight in Iceland. On 21st December, the sun will rise at 11:22 and set at 15:29. Then, everything gets brighter, and our cricket season begins in May.

Utter guff from the Home Office discussing claiming asylum. “We have become the destination of choice in Europe”.
I mean, that country would be at the top of the graph. *checks graph* Oh!
More Farage is right, don’t vote Farage!
No.
Farage is a lying racist with no concern for the UK.
If ministers want to publish the assertion - "we have become the destination of choice in Europe, clearly visible to every people smuggler and would-be illegal migrant across the world" - they should be able to say what they think that means

I hope that demonstrably untrue claim will now be retired

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

It is so obvious...and the place I volunteer at is bracing itself.

5 weeks for a UC claim to be paid, so even if you apply on day 1, which most people don't, you are left without money.

28 days to get a bank account, Evisa, UC, and the small matter of somewhere to live.. 56 days was just enough

Social media enveloping traditional media means everything and everyone is now competing in the entertainment market. Boring stuff like policy that affects millions of lives doesn’t stand a chance.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

I served as our Ambassador in Ukraine for 3 years under Putin’s missiles and drones but resigned when Trump kept appeasing Putin. America does not bow to dictators. It’s not who we are.

Here's why this Trump-Putin so-called "peace plan" is a disaster:
