this is actually a really common way of understanding the world among pundits where events can only be classified if they fit a strict definition and if they don’t fit that definition then they cannot be classified in that way. it is as if they see definitions as structuring reality.

Great thread! One quibble. The “marketplace of ideas” metaphor is unhelpful. People use it to mean things other than the ways in which various markets work. Here the issue that you’ve so insightfully identified is that public opinion is being shaped by a platform market. It is literally a market.
