Prince releases his “1999” LP 43 years ago today.

Of the hit single, he said: “We were sitting around watching a [TV] special about the year 1999. .. Everyone I knew — people I thought were optimistic — were actually dreading those days. .. So I just wanted to write something that gave hope.” 🎸

The Peril of a White House That Flaunts Its Indifference to the Law

The White House has made no legal argument explaining its bald claim that the president has wartime power to summarily kill people suspected of smuggling drugs.

Tackling challenges of subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting—which could transform our ability to anticipate heatwaves, flooding, wildfires, and more—requires siloed scientific communities to work together, write Jadigwa Richter and Everette Joseph of @ncar-ucar.bsky.social. eos.org/opinions/sci...
Scientists Must Join Forces to Solve Forecasting’s Predictability Desert - Eos
To strengthen societal resilience to worsening natural hazards, siloed Earth system science communities must collaborate to understand conditions that favor skillful subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasts.

Wow. What a gorgeous read. The WaPo article he discusses is also good.

To the extent cultural literacy means anything anymore, Col. Kurtz attacked and destroyed a village in large part because he wanted to surf its beach, reveled in its destruction, took casualties and killed a bunch of civilians in the process. Also, Trump could have served in Vietnam but didn't.

Happy b’day “When Doves Cry” — released 41 yrs ago today.

On his last night of mixing, Prince started removing instrument tracks, said engineer Peggy McCreary. “The last thing he did was he punched that bass out. He smiled at me and said, ‘Ain’t nobody gonna believe I’d do this.’ And he did.” 🕊️

“Deported” is really the wrong word here. Normally we deport people and then they’re free in the destination country. This guy was abducted and is being held in constructive U.S. custody without trial in a foreign concentration camp.
El Salvador’s government rebuffed a request Wednesday from Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) to free Kilmar Abrego García, whose case has become a flash point in the battle over President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign since the administration mistakenly deported him last month.

All NWS services: data, forecasts, radar, satellite, IT infrastructure, costs each American taxpayer $4/yr. Less than a latte. And each person gets back 73 x $4 = $292 a year in value for that service.

I think that’s a pretty good deal.
