I'm watching this event. A few thoughts - this may end up a thread.
I've worked in this space a long time and I could be watching this 20 years ago. David's points in particular are outdated - his point about "weak families" when referring to non-nuclear families is deeply disrespectful. 🧵#carers
Speaking at our event David Goodhart says that we should think of social care as a key preventative wing of the NHS, helping to reduce the number of eldery people going into A&E.

This valuing up of social care should extend to its staff, he says, but it should include a higher minimum wage.

Really pleased to be working with BLMUK on a workshop at this year’s Festival of Collective Liberation.

The focus of our session is about building autonomous community infrastructure in response to the harms of the criminal legal system and long-term solutions to care for our communities.

“Lamia Ballal, the director’s wife, said she heard her husband being beaten outside their home as she huddled inside with their three children. She heard him screaming, “I’m dying!”

She saw three men in uniform beating Ballal with rifles and another person who appeared to be filming the attack.

The data is clear on the unequal, racist treatment Black/brown communities face in the criminal legal system

Under a Tory Govt in 2016, the MOJ produced research showing the odds of a receiving a prison sentence for drug offences were 240% higher for “BAME” people compared to white counterparts

How is existing practice, policy, and public narrative ensuring that hard-wired racism in our society is harming Black/brown children?

As part of #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek we highlight several interventions created with young people that are not generic approaches:

Spoke to Sky about mums going to prison and the way our legal system punishes individuals for failures in our social safety net.

♦️60% of women in prison are survivors of domestic abuse
♦️A third of women in prison grew up in care

Time to stop funding prisons and fund community services instead.
