The pattern isn’t new, but it’s getting more embarrassing. Every time a group of people decide to rise up against authoritarianism or suffer under invasion, a particular faction of the Western (mostly American) left rushes in to impose its suffocating binary worldview.

I read about those two families from Texas (incl down the road from where I grew up) who moved to Russia. I've been saying for years that Russia is Janus-like in its foreign PR. It acts like a land of white civilization for white Americans/Europeans and like a decolonization beacon for Africans.

I don't know why people keep saying that. It isn't true. Not even a bit. Dictators last as long as people with guns support their rule. That's it.
Public opinion absolutely matters in a dictatorship, sometimes more than in a democracy. Dictators only last as long as enough people are willing to go along with it.
