A new JMBA paper offers the most detailed look yet at the Asian date mussel in UK waters. Researchers found that while densities remain low in the Solent, the species is growing fast (≈1.8 mm/month) and living longer (up to 23 months) than in many parts of its range.

Global reliance on raw water transfers will dramatically increase in the next few years, but it is also important we mitigate risks such as the spread of invasive species, and pathogens too!

I’m a microbiologist & lab manager @NHM,
also completing my PhD studying invasive parasites in aquatic ecosystems.
Particular interests include invasive species, protists, microbiomes🦠, bivalves🦪, taxonomy & systematics, and of course, my dog🐕!!
