Methane concentration in the atmosphere is rising, contributing to worsening climate change.
Satellite observations by MethaneSAT now show that emissions from US and Caspian oil & gas extraction are much higher than previously estimated.

Why are cycling rates so low in Australia?

And if we want more people to have the choice of active transport options, what can we do?

As @mhharrington.bsky.social explains, the benefits include cleaner and less congested cities, and happier and healthier people. #auspol

The narrative that “oh no, unemployment went down, no rate cut” absolutely shits me to tears.

Don’t let the RBA off the hook.
Unemployment below 4% should not mean interest rates cannot be cut. As @grogsgamut.bsky.social writes - we should celebrate the new normal of unemployment below 4%, and the RBA needs to stop trying to make it rise to 4.5% even while inflation is falling.

Obsessed with growth, human civilization is unaware that it is already finished.  It is spending money it doesn’t have on resources which no longer exist, to raise a generation of humans who are about to fight each other for food.

Dutton is pretty clearly not a sincere operator in the climate / energy debate. Endlessly rehashing this debate is pretty clearly distracting from a few key things:

- Why Aus has seen so many wobbles in power system decarbonisation
- How to get back on a steady track out to 2030
The CSIRO pours cold water on the Coalition’s nuclear claims in a new report. Here’s how
Peter Dutton dismisses the latest analysis from the national science agency. Here’s what it says about energy costs – and the opposition’s criticism

Only strong political action on the climate crisis can secure a future for the reef, and that’s why the Greens, backed by scientists, continue to say no new coal and gas.

All these things are true:

Electric vehicles ARE better than ICE vehicles, despite their issues.

When vehicles get “better,” too often people buy BIGGER vehicles & drive even more.

EV’s still pollute, take too much space, lead to too many deaths etc

Fewer cars, less driving is the REAL solution.

Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.

Heavy vehicles eg SUVs/EVs especially.

A tax system that incentivises people buying big utes for "work" is terrible for the environment.

Emissions from passenger cars have fallen since 2005.

But that has been more than cancelled out by the increase in emissions from utes and other light commercial vehicles.
