I wonder: what was the reaction to the George Wallace attempt back in the day? I'd be willing to bet the NYT probably had the exact same reaction they did now.
It's a Hall of Fame "Feels like I'm taking crazy pills" moment. But if you think of it as a combination of two things: 1) Normalization of opinions that would've got your ass beat for being a Nazi ca. 2010 and 2) Fear of stochastic RW terrorism, I can imagine no more fitting memorial to the man
