“One of the things that really gives me joy is the fact that there are so many amazing, brilliant, creative disabled people out there. But part of my rage — and it’s a very real rage — is that most people don’t really know about them.”

Very sad news about the loss of historian Tim Cook, who died far too young. His impact on our understanding of Canadian military history was just massive. An outstanding historian. He will be missed.

I'll never forget, November, 2016, when his reign of terror began. A couple of days after the election I was in therapy and I said "I know it's not your job to offer political commentary, but I gotta tell you, I'm scared." Therapist paused and said very quietly "something foul has been unleashed."

Robert Redford playing a gentle incarnation of death, coming for a frightened old woman in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" (1962). An extraordinary performance then, terribly bittersweet today

What Robert Redford contributed to American films via Sundance is genuinely immeasurable. He was also an extraordinarily talented director--Ordinary People and Quiz Show are two of the best American studio movies of their eras--and an actor who somehow wore his incredible charisma almost shyly. RIP.

In Russia's air raid on Ukraine tonight, about 15 of its attack drones have entered Polish airspace, per Ukrainian channels.

There's been a few instances of these drones crashing in Poland to date, but this appears to be the most significant Russian intrusion into NATO airspace yet.

On a mid-August afternoon, a helicopter settles onto the Pumice Plain—the dead north slope of Mount St. Helens, buried by avalanche, seared by pyroclastic flows.

Out steps USGS volcanologist Dan Miller, 37. His goal? Cook a 50-lb pig in the ash.
