A small sequel to Plant

The snap of pale fingers draws her attention to the man sitting on the charcoal-grey leather couch.
He doesn't even look up from his iPad when he demands, "Girl, bring me a coffee. Black." Rey freezes in place.
The snapping alone would have been enough to have her wanting to karate chop him in the throat. But it's the girl that sends a shudder of disgust rolling through her body. Instantly she's back in the junkyard. How many times throughout her childhood and teenage years did Unkar shout that at her? Never her name, never acknowledging her as a person -just girl, spat out with nothing but vitriol.
She knows what she would like to do to this red-headed twat, but she's Mr. Ren's assistant now, and she can't go losing her temper on the people he does business with. She'll just have to swallow her pride and do her job.
"Get out," the words are not loud, but they split the air, as cold and dangerous as the ice on a frozen lake cracking under your boots.
Hux startles. "What?"
"If you can't treat Miss Nima respect fully, then you can't be here," Mr. Ren gently touches her elbow as he moves past, placing himself between her and the other man. "So get out."
Mr. Ren's shoulders are so broad that Rey has to tilt her upper body at a ninety degree angle to be able to peek around his bicep and take in Hux's outraged expression.

"You would risk this deal over your assistant?"
"Yes."
It's fun, watching Hux gather up his coat and briefcase and storm out in a huff.
Just as he crosses the threshold, Mr. Ren calls out,
"Tell Snoke I only negotiate with professionals."
The force of the door slamming makes the walls shake.
Entirely unfazed, Mr. Ren saunters back to his desk.
Rey follows, fiddling with some of the papers scattered across the glossy surface.
"Thank you, sir, that was very nic-"
He meets her eyes, "No need to thank me, Miss Nima, it is my responsibility to look after you, understand?" Her throat is too tight to answer out loud, so she just nods. When was the last time someone stood up for her?
"Good. Now, if you could, please go down to the print shop and get the samples of the new logos.
When she returns from the bowls of the skyscraper, there is a coffee from the café around the corner sitting on her desk-iced mocha, her favourite.
She takes a sip, and grins around the straw.
Honey and oat milk, exactly the way she likes.

The dog's frazzled looking owner comes rushing over.
Her cut-off jean shorts and tank top are grass stained and her face is red from running. She one of the most stunning creatures Ben has even seen.
"I'm so sorry," she pants. "BB, get down. You can't just launch yourself at random people. Really, I'm so, so sorry. BB down! "
The rotund Corgi just stamps his little feet on Ben's thighs, gives a defiant snort, and turns his face away from his mom.
"BB!"
"It's okay," Ben reassures the pretty young woman with a chuckle. "He's not hurting anything."
"He's never done this before. Usually he's shy around strangers."
"Well, then, I'm honoured to be chosen," he runs his hand down the fluff-ball's back and receives some enthusiastic kisses to his face in return.
Shifting anxiously from one foot to another, her voice wavers, "He rarely listens to me. He's the first dog I've ever had. I'm not sure he likes me very much."
Not taking his eyes off of her, he brings his fingers to his mouth and lets out a piercing whistle.
Seconds later, a black blur comes skidding to a stop before the wooden bench.

"For months, this monster did the opposite of whatever I told him to do."
The girl bends down, scratching behind the massive wolf dog's ears. "Not this handsome boy," she coos.
"He would never misbehave." Her voice sends a shiver down Ben's spine.
As soon as Kylo starts licking adoringly at her wrist, the series of circles aspiring to be a dog explodes off of Ben's lap, barking furiously and nipping at the much larger dog's heels until Kylo takes off across the lawn once again.
Ben doesn't even attempt to hold in his laughter when
BB flings himself down on the girl's feet with a triumphant huff.
"Well, based on that jealous tantrum, I think it's safe to say BB likes you plenty." He leans forward in his seat, "But I should give you my number, just in case you want some tips on dealing with a high maintenance gremlin.
She bites her lip and it makes his brain go off line for a moment.
"Yeah, that'd be great," she murmurs, tucking a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. "Thanks."
He grins and holds out his hand, "I'm Ben.
She takes it.
"Rey."

“Not that one!”

It’s too late. She has the bottle in her hands, the cork popped to pour the pink liquid into her cauldron. Ben should have known not to place them so close to each other. But his love of order had won out against his better judgement.

Damn the alphabet.

“You said Pyias Pollen.” She looks at him and he can already see her pupils dilating, the hint of confusion in her frown. The vial is so potent it’s airborne.

“That’s not Pyias Pollen,” he says, turning away to frantically open the small windows to a breezeless night, “It’s Pasiah’s Pollen.”

He gulps loudly. “An aphrodisiac.”

He can smell the cloying acid of it already. And the earthy vanilla scent of her shampoo, that herby tang that’s been maddeningly close for months.

“Rey.” He grips the windowsill. He wants to tell her to close the bottle and put it safely back on the shelf. He wants to glue charm them both into their chairs for the next twenty four hours. But when he turns, he finds her calmly looking at the label.

“Oops.” She says.

Her hand comes up slowly, the bottle held by its thin neck.

And she drops it.

Drunk Powerpoint Night is usually Rey’s favorite day of the month. It’s a chance to get tipsy with her friends and rant about Galaxy Wars or martial arts movies or ABBA lyrics to a captive audience. It’s also a chance to subtly ogle Ben Solo he passionately argues about the most pedantic topics she can think of, chosen simply to provoke him to the point where his plush lips purse in irritation and his shirt buttons strain across his broad chest.

So she’s relaxed, cheerful, and one-and-a-half margaritas in when Rose cues up her presentation.

The rest of Rey’s second margarita ends up on Poe’s couch as she splutters at the title on the TV screen: “Why Rey and Ben Should Date.”

Ben knows it's a bad day just from the way she texts him. Single word replies, no emojis, no memes or TikToks.
So he takes off from work early, much to Hux's
fury.
His instinct is proven right when gets home and finds her curled up on the couch, all the lights off and curtains closed, the light from her Switch the only illumination in the room.
But it's the pink cat onesie she's ensconced in that warns him something is very wrong.
Dropping his briefcase on the hardwood floor, he crosses the living room to kneel before the sofa.
She peeks out at him from the safety of her fuzzy hood. Even in the dimness, he can tell her cheeks are red from crying.
"Hi Daddy," her voice is hoarse and it breaks the heart she put back in his chest.
"Hello kitten. Whatcha playing there?" he keeps his tone soft.
Turning the screen so he can see the little farmhouse with it's neat rows of crops.

It was not a career path for everyone.

There was no straight line from your interests in high school to an undergraduate degree. No trade school. No internship opportunities or role shadowing.

No, there was only one way into this kind of job. You have to have lived it first. And no one with a lick of sense would volunteer for that kind of experience.

Rey wouldn’t have chosen this either. However, children aren’t usually asked if they pretty please want to join a cult or not. Especially when their grandfather runs said cult. Most of her childhood was spent in a kind of plan/escape/punishment cycle that she couldn’t really recommend—but it did give her the qualifying skills.
