I'm saying this as somebody who hated school and had trouble learning, because I couldn't keep up with the one size fits all lessons, plus I was bullied. I support the concept of homeschooling in theory, but in practice, it has to be regulated a lot more to actually benefit kids.

Regardless of the reason they keep their kids home, parents need to be held accountable for helping kids meet their social needs, which is another reason I like homeschooling coops. You can't just hide in your house and call that educating. It's about more than just academics.

And there needs to surprise visits into homes, to make sure that other things besides educational standards are not being violated. Children who have little access to information outside of their homes often don't know they're being abused, or that there's someone to report abuse to.

Not all parents are unqualified, but they should have to meet a basic level of competence to show that they are. Even the worst teachers have a minimum standard that they have to pass to be allowed into a classroom. Anyone in charge of a child's education should also have to meet a standard.

Homeschooling works when there is oversight, like the co-ops in L.A. County that several LAUSD teachers participate in, but there is no nationwide standardization, and there are parents who don't want their kids to experience anything that challenges their beliefs, and in some cases, abuse.
