Found a freelancer networking website where to sign up you need to already be a successful freelancer (i.e. have a client network). If I want a network but don't have one, I can't sign up. But if I had a network, I wouldn't need to sign up would I. Who makes buinesses like this?!

Took me a minute to find an email I was waiting on because an automatically applied update switched on the Focused/Other filter and hid the email from me. We need a term for this kind of tech mess up. Auto-broke or update-barred.

It's fireworks night in the UK, the perfect opportunity to go for a walk, wait until a firework goes off with a loud bang and scream "AAAARGH! I'M HIT!"

The key to sticking to habits is to remember that even if you do the thing at quarter to midnight, it still counts as being done that day.

Every act of charity of a failure is government.
The government said they aren’t releasing SNAP benefits in November — but ALDI is helping families out. Their Thanksgiving meal bundle feeds 10 people for just $40! 🦃 Available now through Christmas Eve, it includes 21 items (like a 14-lb turkey + sides). Share this with everyone!

I thought today's Connections had a neat Batman category, but it turns out it was a deep cut trap.

But doctor, I am the editor.
repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself
An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

How typical that on the day I was going to start a new routine I wake up with a big headache and can do Jack All.

Tried an experiment to exercise/read more. Walked on treadmill while reading physical book, moderate success. Played board game while listening to audiobook, went badly. Played Minecraft while listening to audiobook, went well. Will do more of A and C in the future.

Power cut at my house caused me to realise that my only non-mains light source is my phone. So, need to get some torches.

Check your Accessibility Settings folks - as I discovered after some other people posted about it, my "require alt text before posting" setting too had switched itself off.

Thinking about people who have AI psychosis and the uncanny valley. While we have built-in defences against things that look sort of like us, we don't have any for things that talk sort of like us.

This wine is apparently made with AI. I find it amusing that people jumped on a band wagon with a product that if you consume it you've fallen off a wagon.

Coming in 2026: Critterz cancelled after running out of budget due to rising AI costs and poor results from the same AI. Director says "We could never get it to look quite right, so we kept rolling the dice until we couldn't afford to anymore."

Another day, another generic rejection email from a company. They're definitely all using LLMs to make the emails, as I've got not two but three all using the same language within days of each other.

Everyone knows that today the number of babies needed to maintain population levels is 2.1 babies per woman. I can't help but wonder, what was the ratio a hundred years ago to compensate for all the children dying of disease?
"Go to an old cemetery. See all the baby graves from before the 1950s & 60s? After that, hardly any. That's when people started vaccinating their children. If you're unsure what to do to protect your kids, the answer is literally written in stone." — Michael Okuda

How quick we forget.
