It’s vital that we understand religion and religious people. The social sciences are remiss to ignore either.

About every 2-3 weeks since June I get an email saying "Nice article on Hegseth's Christian nationalism in @theconversation.com!" But this was written by *another* Samuel Perry who studies religion & right-wing politics (crazy, right?). He's at Baylor; great dude.

What is CREC? The Christian nationalist group has a vision for America − and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s support
The Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, or the CREC, has a highly patriarchal and conservative interpretation of Scripture.

My wife read this book recently and even watched a live webinar interview with Barrett talking about the book. This was her assessment as well. Barrett tries so hard to portray SCOTUS as above politics it starts to sound like politics itself.
@mgraber1.bsky.social reviews Justice Barrett’s book:
“By presenting judging as a realm of pure law, insulated from politics, the justices offer a picture so implausible that it makes the opposite claim—that judging is nothing but politics—more credible.”

Justice Barrett’s Campaign Biography
Amy Coney Barrett’s book, "Listening to the Law," claims the Supreme Court is above politics. Its very existence proves otherwise.

Even if folks think this about religion, the dismissive mocking attitude toward *studying* religion is part of the problem. Love it or hate it, religion matters A LOT and isn’t going away anytime soon.

Love it when journals let me see other reviewers' reviews immediately after I submit my own review. Sure, I usually get to see them eventually when editors render a decision, but it's better when the manuscript is fresh in mind. Most often it's affirming, but I also like to know when I missed stuff.

What @gelliottmorris.com calls the "Strategist's Fallacy" is an instance of what my favorite French sociologist (Bourdieu) calls the Scholastic Fallacy - the assumption that the way academics think about and see their objects of study will help them make sense of how other, regular people do so.
The GOP has been extremely effective at shaping perceptions of the Democrats, claiming they support policy positions they don't actually support
If your strategy, as a Dem, for winning in 2028 *STARTS* by buying their spin and lies, then you've already lost

Just a recommend. In my Social Problems class I dedicated today to discuss struggles young men/boys are facing in school, employment, dating, etc. We talked about structural reasons, the possibility of "positive masculinity," & policy recommendations. Best class all semester in terms of engagement.

We find that being a white biblical literalist is the strongest predictor of preferring wrongful conviction. Preference for wrongful conviction over erroneous acquittal stems from the combination of sacralized authoritarianism & perceived racial threat.

Hot take: pastors and missionaries shouldn’t make fun of the places where they serve or the people there. Even if the dominant culture is not your native one and you disagree with most residents. It always comes off as dishonoring. A fool’s exchange for a cheap laugh.
