No one tells you in grad school the actual point of conferences: since academia scatters you and your friends across the world, so we need places to get together and hang out and drink, but we trick schools into paying for that by giving talks or whatever

Good to know I’m not the only who remembers the ‘Gen Z stare’ as an almost essential part of (oft forgotten) Gen X culture.
"Gen Z Stare" is so weird to me, because staring blankly at customers has been a stereotype of young service workers for as long as I've been alive.

I have met several people who “hated history” in school yet later in life, once they discovered podcasts and well-written history books, grew to love it.

They never actually hated history; they just hated that it was taught as a list of battle dates.
