James A. Banks: "I would like to describe the complex responses to the Brown decision that occurred in my community when it was handed down on May 17, 1954... In my rural southern community, there was a conspiracy of silence about Brown. It was completely invisible to me as a child."

No one tells you in grad school the actual point of conferences: since academia scatters you and your friends across the world, so we need places to get together and hang out and drink, but we trick schools into paying for that by giving talks or whatever

"Gen Z Stare" is so weird to me, because staring blankly at customers has been a stereotype of young service workers for as long as I've been alive.

Good to know I’m not the only who remembers the ‘Gen Z stare’ as an almost essential part of (oft forgotten) Gen X culture.

You'll find a TON of writing advice online (including from me) — but not all of it’s helpful.

Here are 3 writing tips I hear all the time that I DON'T recommend — and what to do instead. 🧵

My hot take of the day: majors were a mistake. We should expect everyone to get a rounded education. Mostly distribution, with a few electives

I have met several people who “hated history” in school yet later in life, once they discovered podcasts and well-written history books, grew to love it.

They never actually hated history; they just hated that it was taught as a list of battle dates.

Thx @pesaustralasia.bsky.social for the shout out!
