Postdoc @etme.bsky.social / Centre for Medical Ethics / University of Oslo. Interested in death 💀 but also life 🌷
Here’s the step count from my first week of parental leave, starting Monday. Six more months of this should extend my lifespan with a few days.

Last Tuesday I talked about what a ‘dignified death’ means at the world’s only Death Café in Halden, Norway. Very fun and unusual (for me) event. Thanks to the grief group in Halden for inviting.

Older books are selling, newer ones aren’t. Old Music is all the rage, newer artists can barely get played. Older video games and old movie franchises suck up all the attention.

It feels strange but somewhat fitting for these times that I and other philosophers at Norwegian institutions cannot read non-OA articles at Nôus, PPR, Analysis and Wiley's other philosophy journals. I urge editors at Wiley journals to follow the example of PPA and JPP and move to an OA platform.

Digital methods (e.g. text mining) reveal another morally pernicious way that academic publishers’ limit science. We’re only permitted to study articles individually. Studying the articles in the aggregate is illegal. This is a barrier to evidence-gathering that will cost many lives if not removed.

We've stopped speaking English to our baby.
DeepSeek's impact on tech stocks might hurt some. But my partner and I have been diversifying our portfolio, i.e. speaking both English and Chinese to our baby.

Norske ungdommer må ta utdanningsvalg i blinde, advarer ekspert.

Suggesting ‘intellectual’ as a synonym for ‘philosophical’ manages to insult both philosophers and intellectuals at the same time!

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I write with great sadness to say that I have had to change my travel plans and will not be able to join you for the conference to which you had so kindly invited me. I will unfortunately be cancelling all planned visits to the USA. /1

Good news for the @etme.bsky.social project! I now “understand” Hume’s principle. I’ll try to smuggle it into paper somehow by using the method of completely unecessary formalisation.

Meanwhile:
Columbia affiliates have received two emails since the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia student protestor:
— An announcement that campus is locking back down, closing it off from the community
