We spend a lot of time talking about what we disagree with. We spend a lot of time articulating what we don't want to happen. But we don't spend nearly as much time becoming intentional about what we DO want. Our opposition should be moving the world towards OUR vision of the future.

AI is a lack of consent technology
Not satisfied with just destroying their own brand goodwill, OS companies are now using AI to try to destroy the good names of the apps users install. (Scrivener taking out adds to explain how it has no AI but Apple adds some anyway.)

So forcing people to use ShatGPT in their awful software after lobbying against the IRS free tax filing tool?

I feel like whomever said we all expired in 2020 and this is hell might’ve made a few points…
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.

This is y'all's chance to work on a webapp where the whole point of using Rust isn't to scale up—it's to scale DOWN. 6k reqs/s on a sub-US$30 machine is no joke. And it's a hard copyleft ecosystem that we're going to protect for the folks who rely on us! Let's do open source right.

One of the challenges since I got my ADHD diagnosis is that I can't really tell if the issues I observe now are the same as they've always been, or if they're actually worse and I just don't have a good frame of reference. I forget things all the time now. But maybe I always have.

In almost every substantive conversation about AI with working professionals, there's almost always a person who is hardcore anti-AI. But not usually someone who is willing to be a staunch advocate. I wonder what that means.

Like what is the point of going out of your way to sacrifice people like Sarah and Link if it doesn’t even enable you to get at people like Singal? Don’t can’t pretend you care about inciting violence and then utterly fail to actually protect against the worst perpetrators.
It doesn’t really change anything about my view. We need to stop whining about hard it is and look at the outcomes. If these outcomes are the best we can do, then we haven’t actually solved a problem. We’re just pissing people off for no reason.

The reality is that your judgment has to be rooted in your values. That's what's going to determine what you reward and what you punish. And if you're not clear on your values, then they will emerge clearly through your actual actions. In short, Link is banned, Jesse Singal is not. So now we know.

Whew. Listen. You talk to a lot of young people today and the whole conversation is basically them asking “where is the fix?” It’s not that they don’t work hard. They’re actually working very hard to find ways to exploit the system.

"A legislative commission in Richmond has spent the past year surveying nearly every public institution of higher education, finding that at least 11 cited using eminent domain or other means to acquire land in majority-Black neighborhoods."
A new state commission and a local task force are digging into how institutions like Christopher Newport University and others used eminent domain or land acquisitions to displace Black neighborhoods — and they’re making the findings public for the first time.

- NONE of the arrested were criminally charged
- NO evidence the building was "filled with TdA terrorists."

For the record, many many people are not actually clear on their values. It's more difficult than it sounds.
The reality is that your judgment has to be rooted in your values. That's what's going to determine what you reward and what you punish. And if you're not clear on your values, then they will emerge clearly through your actual actions. In short, Link is banned, Jesse Singal is not. So now we know.

I'm gonna push back on this. I feel like people fall victim to this all the time. The flaw in this reasoning is that if the platform has decided to engage in moderation, they don't need to take the word of the person that it's a joke. They need to use their own judgment and make a determination.
An additional element is that it's hard to enforce a policy on threats when an acceptable defense is "It was just a joke / cultural reference"—a defense that a bad actor could weaponize. So I can understand how you might end up with a policy that says, We simply have to apply a blanket rule.
